The Lord of the Rings may well be the most influential work of the 20th century, creating the blueprint for more films, TV shows, and video games than we could possibly count.

It’s hard to come up with a new angle in such a crowded field, but NetEase Games – the Global developer and publisher behind hits like EVE Echoes, MARVEL Super War, and the forthcoming Diablo Immortal – has managed it with The Lord of the Rings: Rise to War.

For a start, it’s not an RPG, the default setting for seemingly all games with a fantasy vibe. Instead, it’s a strategy on an epic scale.

Storywise, the game is set faithfully before the events of the books. Sauron has been defeated and the lost One Ring has reappeared in the Dol Guldur castle. You can employ strategies in fierce battles and create your own stories in Middle-earth.

The Lord of the Rings: Rise to War sees you creating a fortified settlement, putting up a range of buildings, and assembling an army of archers, knights, spearmen, orcs, oliphaunts, and more.

Crucially, this tile-based strategy game allows you to pick a side, so you’re not confined to being a boring old goodie two shoes like Aragorn or Frodo Baggins. You can choose to create or join either a Fellowship or a Warband, full of ugly evil brutes.

Whichever way you go, The Lord of the Rings: Rise to War is a tactically demanding experience. You’ll need to be as hot as resource management as you are in battle.

If you’ve already glanced at the screenshots you’ll know that The Lord of the Rings: Rise to War is a stunning game, and its developers have painstakingly recreated a variety of iconic locations from The Lord of the Rings universe.

You can download The Lord of the Rings: Rise to War for free right now on the Google Play Store, Galaxy Store, and App Store.
