Speed Square is the meeting of two worlds. It looks like a typical block-matching puzzler at first glance – the kind of casual take on puzzling that dominates the mobile app stores these days.

But look a little closer and you’ll find another, older puzzle game lurking beneath its colorful facade. Speed Square is a reimagined version of none other than the mighty Rubik’s Cube. Better still, it’s a Rubik’s Cube that you might just be able to solve.

The goal is simple. You’re presented with a 6×6 grid containing six different colors, all jumbled up. All you have to do is slide the columns and rows of colored blocks until you succeed in shuffling them into six neat lines.

It’s trickier than it sounds – though you’ll be relieved to learn that it’s much less tricky than a real Rubik’s Cube!

Speed Square comes with two modes. There’s Quick Play, which lets you solve puzzles as quickly as possible as you strive to dominate the global leaderboards, and Levels, which is much slower-paced and more strategic.

That’s because this mode slaps a limit on the number of times you can move certain tiles, forcing you to consider each move carefully. There are four difficulty levels to choose from, ensuring that you’ll always be challenged without being overwhelmed.

And you’ll never run out of puzzles, as Speed Square comes with an unlimited supply.

Naturally, Speed Square comes packing Game Center leaderboards for all of its gameplay modes, and Game Center achievements to unlock on the way to becoming a Speed Square master.

There’s a swap power-up too, which allows you to swap the location of two tiles on the board – without the need to move the whole column/row. Handy.

Speed Square is an ingenious twist on the Rubik’s Cube format, with scalable difficulty that makes it perfect for players of all abilities and levels of experience. There’s even a colorblind mode, addressing one of the most glaring deficiencies of the original puzzle.

You can get your hands on Speed Square right now too. It’s free with in-app purchases, and you can find it on the App Store right now.
