NBA Ball Stars is a slick puzzler that pits your matching skills in tight and exciting games of basketball. Yeah, matching and basketball, the combination none of us knew we wanted until it turned up.
While the tap-to-match system is pretty easy to understand, there’s a lot going on under the hood that you’re going to have to get to grips with if you want to get the most out of the game. Which is why we’ve written this beginners guide to make sure that you’re up to speed with everything that NBA Ball Stars has to offer.

When you don’t have a match for the color of the player you’re currently controlling, think about what you can achieve outside of scoring some points. Look at your other players and see how close they are to powering up their special move, for example. Look for the biggest matches too, as they’ll unlock powerful tiles that can benefit you in the long-run.
If the opposing team is about to power up their special and you don’t have a chance to get their score down to zero or yours up to 100, try and use one of your own specials to cancel them out. It’s not always possible, but if you play smart you’ll often find yourself with a chance to ruin your opponent’s day.
This is one of the most important things to know. Whenever you get the chance, you need to be upgrading your players. Whether that’s levelling them up, adding new gear or upping their star count. The stronger your players, the higher your OVR and the better chance you have of winning games.
This is a list of challenges that grant you rewards, with some even bigger goodies at the end. You’ll complete a lot of the challenges just by playing, but check in regularly to see if there’s anything else you need to be doing to keep the list moving.
There are plenty of rewards waiting for you in the different game modes, whether you’re playing in PvP or PvE. Jump into the modes when you unlock them and try and complete all the challenges they throw at you. Make sure you’ve got a strong team before you hit the PvP though, because you’re going to be coming up against some pretty impressive players.
