The RTS genre might not be the best fit for mobile, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of examples you can have a lot of fun with on your smartphone or tablet. Examples like the ones we’ve included on this list of the top ten mobile RTS games in 2021.

Whether you’re into historical scraps, fights in deep space or you’d rather not kill anyone at all, there’s plenty of games to choose from on this here list. Honestly, you can’t go wrong picking any of them.

So without further ado, here’s our list of the very best real-time strategy games that you can grab for mobile right now.

Company of Heroes

One of a couple of classic PC RTS game ports that make it onto this list. This one’s set during World War 2 and sees you fighting your way through some of the most iconic battlefields of that conflict. The game has been tweaked for touchscreen and plays remarkably well. Seriously, check it out.

Mushroom Wars 2

Mushroom Wars 2 squishes the basic shape of the RTS into a series of shows of numerical superiority. You need to think hard about where you send your troops on each level, building up your little empire tower by tower.

Rome: Total War

Another desktop classic that’s made its way to mobile. This one sees you taking over the armies of Rome and heading out on a series of campaigns. There are a bunch of different expansions available now and you can play on phones and tablets.

Plague Inc

While most of the games on here involve leading armies into war, this one’s about taking control of a global pandemic. It’s a particularly pertinent experience right now and there’s more than enough going on to keep you entertained for hours and hours.

Iron Marines

This one was built from the ground up for mobile and it shows. It shuffles around the RTS template and builds something really special. You can tell it was made by the same company behind Kingdom Rush, but it’s got more than enough of its own swagger as well.

Rebel Inc

Where Plague Inc is all about diseases, Rebel Inc is about helping and rebuilding a country ravaged by war. It’s pretty awesome to play an RTS that’s about looking out for people instead of, y’know, shooting them in the face until they explode.

Kingdom Two Crowns

A bit of a strange one, but it’s technically an RTS and it’s a really good game. Ride around your kingdom dropping gold in the pockets of your subjects and trying to turn around its fortunes. There’s loads more going on here and finding it all out is about 74% of the fun.

Bad North: Jotunn Edition

Vikings are attacking your island home and you’re the only one who can stop them in this mix of an RTS and a roguelite. It looks gorgeous but it’s hiding a super difficult heart. You’re going to lose, a lot, but you’re going to come back stronger every time you do.

Xenowerk Tactics

This one has some RTS elements as well as ideas from a bunch of other genres. It’s deep, it’s massive and you can play the first chunk for free to find out if it’s the sort of thing you’re going to like. But since you’re reading a list about the best RTS then it probably is going to be the sort of thing you like.

Element RTS

This one condenses the RTS genre down into more bite-sized chunks. It’s still gorgeous and deep and full of bright ideas, but you can play a game in a few minutes instead of a few hours. Definitely one for the play-on-the-train brigade.
