The match-stuff puzzler is a bit of a mobile gaming standard. There are loads of them on the App Store and Google Play Store. So many that, perhaps, it can sometimes be a bit overwhelming to find a new one to play.
That’s where this list comes in. We’ve picked the best match-stuff games that you can download right now and put them here in no particular order. There are shallow games, there are deep games and there are games that are somewhere in between. We reckon there might be something for everyone.
Think we’ve missed something out? Want to recommend your favorite game? Then make sure you stick your suggestions in the comments section at the bottom of the article. Before that, though, here are what we think are the best match three puzzlers for mobile in 2020.
Funko Pop! Blitz
An unbelievably addictive matcher that sees you collecting bobble-headed digital toys. Every character has its own special move, and you can upgrade them to make them more powerful and get higher scores. Throw in regular events and you’ve got yourself a compulsive way to waste a lot of time.
Marvel Puzzle Quest
A match-stuff puzzler with a superhero twist. Fight villains, collect a team of the most powerful heroes and save the world. As you’d expect from something bearing the Marvel branding, this one’s polished to a mirror shine.
A beautiful and meditative hand-crafted puzzler that mixes matching with calming music and an interesting narrative. Ruya shows what the match-stuff genre can achieve if it isn’t just aiming to suck cash out of your wallet.
Ticket to Earth
There’s a super-smart twist to Ticket to Earth that meshes combat into match-three mechanics. The results are a brilliantly tactical experience that’s unlike anything else on this list. There’s a brilliant story here to top things off nicely.
There’s a good chance you’ve already had to recover from a severe Triple Town addiction. If not, you may as well develop one now. A mix of town-building and matching, this is the sort of game that you’re going to sit down to play for five minutes and then it’s two days in the future and you’re a half-starved wreck.
You Must Build a Boat
You really must. This puzzler sees you building an ark to transport animals. Match things, build another section of your boat, rinse and repeat. This one’s wonderfully charming, and has more than a few twists up its pixel-art sleeve.
A mixture of a matcher and Tetris, with a few other ideas thrown in for good measure. It might take a while to click, but when it does you’re going to find yourself playing Cubinko for a lot longer than you expected.
Download Cubinko from the App Store
Candy Crush Saga
Really you could put any of the Saga games here. They pretty much perfected the casual match-stuff formula. They’re not the deepest, they’re not the prettiest, but they’re devilishly addictive all the same.
A classic matcher reimagined for mobile. It’s going to worm its way into your brain, to the point where you’ll be seeing jewels in your day to day life. We don’t know if that’s a good thing, but it proves just how effective the game is.
This one sees you building up a garden by combining plants together. It’s a lot more interesting than that sounds, though, and has some fresh ideas that keep things moving along nicely. It also looks and sounds gorgeous.
Angry Birds Match 3
Of all the recent Angry Birds games, this is probably one of the best. Match birds, blow stuff up, then do it again. There’s a high level of polish to everything here, and the game is perfect for those little mobile gaming sessions.
Rather than matching solid objects, Tiny Bubbles sees you combining, well, tiny bubbles. It’s a simple twist, but it makes things really intriguing. Even if you’re a bit tired of the match-stuff formula, you’re probably going to enjoy Tiny Bubbles and all its clever ideas.
A prime example of just how good Apple Arcade has been for mobile gaming. This is a bright and intelligent match-stuff puzzler that isn’t afraid to play around with the shape of the genre. Pick it up and we can pretty much guarantee that you’re going to fall in love with it.
Here you’re matching buildings instead of gems or sparkly blobs. It’s a simple idea and throws the third dimension into the mix. High Rise makes you think in new ways and different directions, and that’s earned it its place on this list.
Pokemon Cafe Mix
This one is pretty much guaranteed to put a big smile on your face. You’re matching cute Poke-faces, serving cakes and generally having a lovely old time. Pokemon Cafe Mix drips with charm in all of the right ways.
A fiercely addictive and painfully simple game about matching dots. You’ll play one game and wonder what all the fuss is about, and then you’ll have played a hundred games and won’t be able to think about anything else.
Empires and Puzzles
An epic match-stuff RPG that sees you slaying dragons, heading out on raids and generally doing fantastical things. There’s PvP, base-building and a whole load more to sink your teeth into here.
