Holovista (download from the App Store) is a lot of things. It’s an exploration of grief, a fable about moving on and a social media-infused dissection of modern life. It’s also a deeply engaging hidden object game with some amazing ideas and a story that’ll keep you playing all the way to the end.

You play the game through a phone-on-your-phone. Each level sees you taking photos of different objects with that phone’s camera, exploring your surroundings and revealing more about the world around you.

Then you post the pictures on your social media feed. Here you’ll interact with other characters, through comments, their own posts, and DMs. If you’ve ever been on Instagram, you’re already going to have the controls for Holovista down.

The deeper you get into the game, the stranger things get. You’ve just started a new job in an architecture firm, and it’s fair to say that nothing is what it seems. Troubling images start to appear, and slowly but surely your history is revealed.

Holovista is a perfect game to play on a rainy afternoon. It isn’t super long, but you’re going to love every second of it. I’m not ashamed to admit that there was a tear in my eye when I get to the end. It’s dark in places, but there’s a strong message of self worth and love that’s really life-affirming.

This is a brilliant, engaging and intelligent use of mobile tech to tell an important story. It’s rich in all the right ways, and will leave you thinking long after you’ve put it down.
