The App Store has become host to some of the very best card games in recent times. Some offer meaty, in-depth experiences that you can lose weeks of your life to. Others, like Cast, offer something a little more bite-sized. That’s not a bad thing, though, and Cast proves that you can stuff a lot of fun into a small package.
The game is all about sliding cards around a grid. You start by picking a card of a particular color. Slide it into a card of the same hue and you’ll combine the points totals of the two. Keep sliding into cards of the same color and you’ll keep scoring points.
So far so simple. But there are cards of other colors on the board too. Hit one of those and you’ll lose the number of points listed on it. Hit zero and it’s game over. That’s where special cards come in – some of them let you change color and continue your run.
Cast a Spell
You can learn everything that Cast has to show for itself in one game. But it’s unlikely you’re going to stop playing when you’ve got the concept nailed. There’s an addictive drive here that’s going to keep you playing for much longer than you might have anticipated.
Cast is the perfect game for filling those stolen moments of play. You don’t have to think too much and you can control it with a single digit. The shine wears off after a while, but the compulsive nature of the experience is going to mean you’re going to be having a blast before it does.
It might not have the depth of other card games that fit in your pocket, but Cast absolutely nails pocket-sized midcore gaming. It’s fun, it’s fast and it’s going to drag you back in over and over again.
