Teamfight Tactics has just landed on mobile, bringing Riot Games’ version of auto-chess into the palm of your hand. It might be a game where most of the action is out of your control, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of hints and tricks that are going to help you when you’re starting out.

We’ve put a good few hours into the game since it came out, and we reckon we’ve got to grips with everything the strategy game has to offer in the early stages. Now we’ve written this guide to make sure you’re going to be in the best possible place when you start out.

If you’ve got your own hints and tricks then feel free to add them in the comments section at the bottom of the article. In the meantime though, let’s get on with our beginners hints, tips and tricks for Teamfight Tactics.

Know Your Heroes

One of the keys to success when you’re playing the game is building the best possible team you can. That doesn’t necessarily mean having the strongest heroes though. Each of the characters that you can use fits into one or two classes.

Joining together characters of the same class will give you extra bonuses in fights, so it’s important not just to focus on buying the biggest and baddest clobberers. Instead, look at the powers that your original hero has and try and build a team around them.

XP

The more XP you have, the more heroes you can have on your team. You need to spend coins to upgrade your XP though, so it’s important to find a balance between spending your coins on characters and spending your coins on more XP.

Sometimes it’s okay to sell reserve heroes in order to get more cash to spend on XP. It all depends on the heroes that are on offer in the shop at the end of the round. If there’s nothing there that’s going to help in building your team, then consider upping your XP so you can be better prepared in the rounds to come.

Move Your Spirit

When coins and other items are dropped on the map, you can collect them with your spirit. Tap on the screen and your spirit will jog across to that point, picking up anything that it passes along the way.

Those coins can come in really helpful when you’re in trouble, and the items that you pick up can range from new equipment to new heroes. Any leg up that you can get is going to help, so try and find them wherever you can.

Choose Well

When it comes to the free hero rounds, it’s vital that you pick up the best character available. Even if you end up grabbing a hero that isn’t going to work in your team, the difference between picking up a grey hero and a purple one should be obvious.

Even if you’re going to sell on the hero, you’ll get more coins for a more powerful hero. The more you play the better you’ll be able to recognise which heroes are on offer, so putting the time in and learning what your choices are is really important.
