There aren’t a large number of first person shooters for the Switch, but at first glance Demon Pit seems the perfect fit for the system.

It’s a shooter where you’re dumped into the titular pit, and your only aim is to beat your last score – which you do by blasting away at endless waves of demon spawn.

The arena morphs and changes as you progress further, with platforms, walls, and various other obstacles being added. You can even traverse it using a grappling hook (moodily titled the “soul grapple” here).

And that’s it.

Sure, there’s a fair few enemy types but they all pretty much make a beeline for you once they’ve appeared – which can on occasion be right on top of you – and it doesn’t take long before you tire of their predictable patterns.

You face the same enemies and obstacles every time you play too, in the same order. There’s no randomisation. This might not be a huge issue if the combat was exciting enough, but sadly it isn’t.

All the weapons are fine, but that’s as far as it goes – there isn’t anything that really offers a satisfying kick, meaning this is a game that struggles to grab you in any meaningful way.

It’s a shame as the presentation is suitably grungy and the controls are responsive – it’s just not something you’ll end up playing for long.

The good

  • Enjoyable old school presentation
  • Arena shifting is cool

The bad

  • Gets dull quickly
  • Gunplay unsatisfying

Simon has been playing portable games since his Game Boy Pocket and a very worn out copy of Donkey Kong Land 2, and he has no intention of stopping anytime soon. Playing Donkey Kong Land 2 that is. And games in general we suppose.
