Crossy Road lacks jeopardy, because it’s about something almost all of us do almost every day: crossing a road.
Sure, things can go wrong, but for the most part getting from one side of the road to the other is a rather mundane activity that’s unlikely to result in serious injury as long as you know your green cross code.
Developer Hipster Whale has fixed that problem in its latest update, which takes the tricky cuboid obstacle-dodging premise and blasts it off into space.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the gameplay, Crossy Road sees you bouncing upwards on a constantly scrolling screen, collecting coins, avoiding cars on the road, and aiming for logs on the water.
Basically, it’s Frogger, but isometric, and with a whole host of fun characters to unlock, and a hugely influential blocky pixel-art style.
In Space World, which we already much prefer to the original world, the cars and trucks are replaced with huge spinning meteors, and the logs are replaced with steel beams, presumably belonging to a space station that’s either under construction or falling apart.
The trees in the background, meanwhile, are replaced with colorful protruding space rocks and cute little landing craft, and the soothing hum of the terrestrial vehicles is replaced with a constant atmospheric blast of white noise with everything moving silently through it. Eerie.
For our money, Crossy Road is best played on a computer, where you can use the nice, clear, clicky cursor keys instead of swipes and prods. Poki is the exclusive publisher of the Crossy Road on the web.
