While Telltale’s hotly anticipated Batman series might make its debut today on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, its first episode won’t appear on the App Store or Google Play until September 13th. That, my friends, is a significant bat-bummer.
This revelation came in today’s press release announcing the availability of the first episode. No reason was given for the staggered release, but it’s a pretty clear break from Telltale tradition. The studio’s past mobile versions have usually released on the Thursday following a game’s launch, not six weeks later. From today’s presser:
“BATMAN – The Telltale Series Episode One: Realm of Shadows makes its worldwide debut digitally today on PC from the Telltale Online Store, Steam, and other digital distribution services; on the PlayStation®Network for PlayStation 4; and on the Xbox Games Store for Xbox One®. The premiere episode will also be available later this week on Mac from the Telltale Online Store, Steam, and other digital distribution services; later this month on the PlayStation®Network for PlayStation 3, and on the Xbox Games Store for Xbox 360®; and the week of Sept. 13 for compatible iOS devices via the App Store, and for compatible Android-based devices via Google Play and the Amazon Appstore.“
Even stranger, today’s Batman launch features the debut of Telltale’s multiplayer “Crowd Play” feature, which lets up to 24 local players vote on story decisions from their mobile devices. You’d think having a mobile game to promote to such players on day one would be a no brainer, right?
Delay or not, there’s no question that mobile is set to play a big part in Telltale’s Batman plans, teasing a Crowd Play version that could accommodate more than 1000 mobile voters in “upcoming live events in theaters.”
Sit tight, Bat-fans. Our mobile day is coming.
