If you’re a fan of Clash of Clans, you’re no doubt chomping at the bit to try Clash Royale, the first spin-off in the series currently available in select markets only. If you happen to live in one of those markets (or are really good at pretending), you’re going to want to start your Clash Royale career on the right foot. At the start of a match, it’s easy to drop troops in as soon as you can afford to — and in a lot of games, that might make sense. Clash Royale is different. Wait until your ether reaches its max count of 10 and your enemy puts down their first fighter before you start placing troops on the field. This will give you enough ether to place a defensive unit in the lane that needs it, and an offensive unit in the lane that your opponent may have left undefended.
There seems to be a clear delineation between standard troops and heroes in Clash Royale. Your Giant, Baby Dragon, and Prince, for example, can deliver massive amounts of damage to enemy buildings — so long as they can reach them. This is where your lesser troops come in handy. If you can spare the elixir, try to send your heroes out with an escort to lead the way. A pack of Barbarians or Goblins can help to clear the path for your hero far better than your hero alone can. The best troops to use in this way (in our humble opinion) are the Valkyrie and Musketeer. They’re boffo at dealing with enemy troops, which also makes them great as defensive units.
In a lot of ways, Clash Royale is a game of knowing when to attack and when to defend. There will be some opportunities where you might be able to juggle both, but for the most part, this is a game of focusing your troops on the problem at hand. If your opponent’s troops are nearing the border, you need to drop what you’re doing and PUSH HARD to fight them back. Once the fight carries back to their side of the border, keeping push. You’ve just turned a smart defensive choice into a strong offense, turning the tide of battle.
If you want to grow your army in Clash Royale, you’ll need to get more cards. The most basic way to do this is to unlock chests, which you’ll be awarded for winning matches. But this takes time, and isn’t always the most efficient way to get what you want. Another option is to keep an eye on the shop, where you’ll be able to spend gold to purchase specific cards. There will be three cards of varying quality available each day. If they don’t have anything you’re looking for, check back tomorrow.
But the best way to get the cards you’re after? Join a clan. You can request donations of a specific card from your clanmates, and so long as you’re not looking for something extremely rare, a full clan should be more than happy to fulfill your request. Just remember to give as much as you get — that’s what keeps the ecosystem working.
You can only bring 8 cards into battle with you, and figuring out your dream team takes a lot of trial and error — but it’ll never happen unless you get creative. Don’t be afraid to mix and match in different combinations until you find what works for you. The only real bit of advice here is to try and have a deck that’s balanced to have a bit of everything: heroes, troops, and spells.
Then again, why take our advice? Go nuts and try anything! Why not take a team into battle based on using cards with the lowest elixir cost? Or try to build a team made of mostly flying characters? Eventually you’ll find something that works for you — even if some silly choices along the way help you to understand the strengths and weaknesses of each card type. And always be revising your team. Newer cards and stronger troops should always be considered as a substitute for your weakest link.
This seems like an obvious tip, but in case you need a reminder, schedule your play in a way that gives you the maximum number of free chests per day. Free chests are awarded every 4 hours, and can be stacked two chests deep. That means you should be returning to Clash Royale at least every 8 hours to maximize the number of chests you receive.
