Ys – that’s pronounced like “ease,” by the way – is a near-ancient action RPG series that’s been consistently popular in Japan, but never quite reached the same level of reverence in the West. That hasn’t stopped a number of Ys games from making their way to our shores, however. In fact, the trickle continues with an upcoming mobile Ys game called Ys Chronicles 1.

Ys Chronicles 1 was initially released on the PC and PSP as a remake of the very first Ys game, “Ancient Ys Vanished: Omen.” The mobile remake is happening thanks to DotEmu, a studio that focuses on preserving and re-releasing classic games.

Ys Chronicles 1 stars Adol Christin, a young swordsman whose name is one letter away from being controversial. Adol must free the land of Esteria from a demon horde, which can be done by gaining experience, finding enchanted artifacts and weapons, and discovering six sacred books. Everyone knows demons hate reading. They consider themselves far more proficient at terrifying innocent people.

There’s no release date, and no word on how Ys Chronicles 1 will be adapted for mobile. Just be patient. Familiarize yourself with the franchise’s history for now, or work on its pronunciation.
