Let’s talk inside baseball for a minute. We get a lot of emails here at Gamezebo; more than enough to have identified a few red flags. “From a new studio created by former [insert studio name here] developers” is one of them. It’s a promising pitch that almost always ends in disappointment.

And yet I can’t help but smile when I watch the trailer for Checkpoint Champion.

A new game from Matt Knights and Dean Loades (formerly of Halfbrick), Checkpoint Champion challenges players to drive across as many checkpoints as they can in 10 seconds. But this isn’t any old racing game where checkpoints show up in a straight line on a track. These checkpoints are little circles scattered in a million different directions, so you’ll need to spin that steering wheel left and right as frantically as you can to rack up that high score.

It looks simple, charming, and fun – or to put a finer point on it, Checkpoint Champion looks like the sort of game this duo’s former employers would have been delighted to publish.

Will Checkpoint Champion break the “we used to work for a big name” curse? Find out when Protostar Games’ debut makes a pit stop on the App Store and Google Play on November 20th.
