Gunswords Preview

Bringing a knife to a gunfight doesn’t seem like such a bad idea when your blade of choice is a gunsword. And while I don’t know if any gunswords will be in the upcoming Gunswords – or, to be perfectly honest, what exactly a “gunsword” is – the new game from Russian developer One Button Studio looks like it might be a healthy dose of fun for strategy fans.

Gunswords promises deep, turn-based PvP strategy action that’s easy to pick up but hard to master.

Gunswords

Gunswords is a squad-based online game in which players must assemble teams of fighters from three distinct classes, arm them with a variety of upgradable weapons and spells and then set them against online opponents in “fast-paced yet strategically challenging” turn-based PvP action. Players will manage their squad on a hex-based battlefield cloaked by the fog of war, timed by action points and salted with unique power-ups. Victory brings with it rewards and higher ranks, and also the currency needed to buy and upgrade weapons and fighters, with the ultimate goal of becoming a Gunswords champion!

I haven’t seen the game in action yet, but a preview video on YouTube boasts a very distinct and even comedic visual style that definitely isn’t lacking in brutality. It doesn’t show off any actual gameplay – the video is made up entirely of animated characters killing each other in increasingly exotic ways, but is otherwise lacking any of the components on display in the pre-release screenshots – but if Gunswords manages to bring that level of excitement and humor to its digital battlefield, it could be a lot of fun.

Gunswords

Gunswords is currently scheduled to enter open beta on November 27.
