It seems like Canada is first a lot these days. A lot of mobile game companies release their games on Apple’s App Store in Canada first, and then in the US and globally in order to test and get the bugs out. And Canada has always been first to celebrate Thanksgiving, a full month before it is celebrated in the United States.
To celebrate Thanksgiving in Canada, we’ve put together our list of five games created in Canada this year that we’re thankful to be playing. Are there any great Canadian games we’ve missed? Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP – Capybara Games is a studio that rarely fails to impress. Whether we’re talking about their classic puzzler Critter Crunch or the upcoming Super Time Force, there’s always something jaw-dropping from this Toronto-based team right around the corner. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that Sword & Sworcery made our list of amazing games. Equal parts old school adventure game and Punch-Out! with enough style to choke a moose, EP changed the landscape for mobile gaming. (And if you still don’t have an iOS device, fret not; the game recently made its Steam debut!)
Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack – Puzzle platformers have always been popular, but the genre seems to have exploded for desktop gamers in 2012. But despite the sea of similar games out there, Mutant Blobs Attack has managed to stand out from the competition with a rare style that emphasizes platforms over puzzles. Drinkbox Studios next game looks like it might provide a similar sense of fun; the luchadore-starring Metroidvania platformer Guacamelee.
Trainyard – Everybody loves trains. Well, everybody but me. The real things make me queasy. I think it’s all that bumping and shaking. But thanks to Ontario-based developer Matt Rix, I can have way more fun with trains than I ever could on trains. While it’s been around for a few years now, Trainyard is still one of the best mobile puzzle games around.
Home – It’s been a long while since there was a horror game that messed with your mind nearly as well as Home. Developer Benjamin Rivers took an unsettling starting point – waking up in a strange room – and put the story-telling powers from that point forward in the hands of the player. Every decision a player makes determines how the story ends. It’s almost like a Choose Your Own Adventure, only with more walking, more blood and far fewer happy endings.
Mega Run – After reaching mega-success with their first release Mega Jump, Get Set Games decided to take their mascot on a more horizontal adventure. That’s right – in Mega Run, Redford goes platforming. And with such colorful characters and scenes, few platformers look (or play) quite as nicely on your iPhone. We can’t wait to see what mega adventure Get Set Games cooks up next!
