Metal Gear Solid fans, brace yourself: Konami has just announced that they’re working on a game with GREE to bring Snake and his pals to your favorite mobile devices later this year in the series first social outing: Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops.
The announcement was made this morning at Konami’s 25th Anniversary event for the Metal Gear franchise, and while details are scant, there are a few things we’ve heard. For one, Andriasang is reporting that players will “form a battalion with cards to engage in battle.” They’ve also claimed that the game with have a Mother Base development mode, not unlike Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.
Social Ops is being developed in full 3D using the Unity engine, and judging from the few screens that are available, it’s making full use of the technology. But how exactly will Social Ops play? At this point, that’s anybody’s guess.
On the one hand, the Metal Gear series has already had some amazing card-based gaming experiences with the PSP-exclusive Metal Gear Ac!d series. If you’ve ever had the chance to play them, they’re no doubt on your short list of games you wish Konami would port the smartphones. On the other hand, social card battle games like Rage of Bahamut and Legend of the Cryptids are cleaning up on mobile phones right now. These games, while top notch for their intended audience, don’t really offer the depth of the Ac!d games. If we were to speculate, it seems that Social Ops might end up more like the latter than the former. After all – licenses from Transformers to Disney are getting in on the craze – so why no Metal Gear?
If you’re anxious to know how Social Ops actually plays, you won’t have to wait long to find out. The game will be playable on the show floor at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, September 20-23.
