Square Planet Preview

It’s an age old tale — the round peg trying to fit into a square hole.  Or is it the square peg trying to fit into a round hole?  Either way, it’s a story of not fitting in… of a world that’s very design is contrary to your own.  It’s a sad story — one that we’ve all felt to some extent at some point in our round and/or square lives.  Imagine though if an entire planet was square, and you, a very round creature, were stuck in it?

It is most definitely not hip to be square

It’s an age old tale — the round peg trying to fit into a square hole.  Or is it the square peg trying to fit into a round hole?  Either way, it’s a story of not fitting in… of a world that’s very design is contrary to your own.  It’s a sad story — one that we’ve all felt to some extent at some point in our round and/or square lives.  Imagine though if an entire planet was square, and you, a very round creature, were stuck in it?

Well, that’s the plight of the protagonist in Square Planet.  He (or she) looks like a cross between Pac-Man and an angry bird, while everything else on this square planet looks like a high definition rendering of an old Playstation One platformer.  That is to say it looks good, in a semi-nostalgic kind of way.  The psuedo-cubism of Square Planet is very catching — like Minecraft without the pixels.

Square Planet

Square Planet

Square Planet is a motion controlled platformer that tasks you with guiding your circular avatar across square worlds in search of your imprisoned, circular companions.  I’m not sure why, but apparently the residents of the square planet do not like round things and have thrown them all in jail.  You must travel through the “Square Forest, Rock Caverns, Cube City, Hard Sewers, Edge Factory and Square Prison” to save them all.  Along the way, you’ll have to contend with environmental hazards like gravity switches and alarms, while utilizing the sort of power ups that any self respecting platformer wouldn’t be caught without.

If this sounds like fun to you (it does to me), then you won’t have to wait too long to play it.  Square Planet will be headed to iOS in the Fall.
