EA brings a real city-building experience to Facebook with SimCity Social

Duck and Cover: SimCity is coming to Facebook, and the shockwave is going to be huge. SimCity Social, a venture between EA studios Maxis and Playfish, offers a realistic city-building experience that’s atypical of traditional Facebook-based building games. EA isn’t shy about setting SimCity Social apart from Zynga’s fare, either, having chosen the tagline “More City, Less Ville” for the game.

“Facebook gamers have been waiting a long time for the original and best city-building game to come to the platform,” Playfish’s Vice President of Global Studios, Jami Laes, stated in a press release distributed earlier today by EA. “This isn’t your typical drag and drop city-building game. Players don’t just build a city – they choose the kind of city they want and watch its soul come to life as it grows and reacts to their decisions. With SimCity Social, we’ve taken the best in social gaming design and married it with unprecedented depth to create an all-new deeply social experience.”

SimCity Social encourages creative freedom by setting players on a non-linear path. Cities evolve according to the choices that you make not only when building, but also depending on how you solve real-world crises like fires, crime, pollution, and mutant space reptile attacks.

The social element in SimCity Social goes beyond visiting your friends’ cities and collecting resources, too. You can build friendly relationships with neighboring cities, or you can form intense rivalries through a “friend-and-foe system.” New York vs New Jersey 2012: This time, it’s on Facebook.

SimCity Social will be available on Facebook soon. Lots more information will be forthcoming on Gamezebo, so in the meantime, don’t touch that red button marked “LAUNCH,” mayor.
