Et tu, Cave?

Love them or hate them, it seems pretty certain that social games are here to stay. Over the last few years, we’ve seen more and more traditional gaming companies embrace the world of social gaming – though I don’t think any of us expected to see this company make the jump. Cave – the developer behind crazy “bullet hell” shooters like Bug Princess and Deathsmiles, have just announced that they’re going to focus less on their hardcore audience and more on a social one.

This announcement comes on the heels of a reduced earnings forecast for both the first half of 2012, and 2012 as a whole. According to the blog Andriasang, “the company cited difficulties in the consumer games markets. Due to stagnation in this area, retailers were holding off on making purchases, causing new releases to fail to meet expected sales targets.”

The solution? Cave is going to put some in-development products on hold to put more resources into developing social games. No word yet on what platforms these will be developed for, or what the content of these games will be. Stay tuned to Gamezebo, as we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
