The Golden Globes wrapped up last night and The Oscars as just around the corner. Award season is officially in full swing, and it’s not just for movies and TV either. The International Mobile Gaming Awards have just unveiled the 30 games nominated for the 7th annual IMGAs.

This year’s awards are divided into six categories representing excellence in casual games, “real world” games, sports games, design, gameplay and innovation. 263 games were submitted for review by an international panel of experts who narrowed the nominations down to the top five games for each category.

“We have had an unprecedented response for the year’s awards”, said Maarten Noyons, CEO and Founder of the IMGA. “We see a trend of very high quality, big productions coming to the mobile platform and on the other hand a lot of fresh innovative casual games. I think the jury has made a very interesting choice. The 7th IMGA shows a wealth of new ideas and ground-breaking quality coming from studios all over the world. I would like to congratulate each of the developers that have games nominated and thank everyone who submitted games to the awards.”

The problem with an awards system that requires developers to submit their own games for consideration is that many truly stand-out games simply won’t be considered. It seems downright impossible that a mobile gaming awards nominations list for the last year could be published without seeing games like Cut the Rope and Chaos Rings on there, but that’s exactly what happens when games need to be submitted rather than simply acknowledged. On the flipside though, at least this may give some lesser known titles a chance to shine.
