Risk Preview

Over the last few years a number of world domination board games have taken up residence on Apple’s popular iDevices. Whether it’s the consistently popular Lux DLX for the iPhone, the recently popular Dominion HD for the iPad, or the recently released Blood & Honor for both, the App Store has seen no shortage of board games for backyard Napoleon’s. And yet despite all of these titles that borrow their gameplay from it, no one has thought to bring the game that started it all to the iPhone – until now.

Risk Preview: Prepare for global domination!

EA Mobile has just announced plans to bring Risk, the classic strategy board game of world domination, to the smaller of Apple’s mobile devices. Set to release later this summer, Risk will provide iPhone and iPod Touch players with an experience faithful to its physical counterpart. Players will roll the dice to attack, invade neighbouring countries, and attempt to become the sole ruler of the globe.

For those looking to tackle a single player experience, Risk will offer a variety of AI opponents that utilize their own strategies and display unique emotional responses. Multiplayer will be supported via WiFi, Bluetooth, and Pass’n’Play. When playing on one device up to 6 friends can get in on the action, while using multiple devices limits the total to 4. Sadly, it doesn’t look like we can expect internet play.

It should be interesting to see how things pan out when Risk arrives this summer. On the one hand, there’s plenty of competition in the world domination market, and when you look at the features list a number of competitors seem to have the advantage. On the other hand, Electronic Arts has had a stellar track record of board game to iPhone translations in recent years, and there’s no reason to think this one will be any different.
