Despicable Me: Minion Mania Preview

On July 9th, a new family film from Universal Studios will hit theatres around the world. Featuring the voice talents of Steve Carrell, Russell Brand, and Danny McBride, the cast of this animated feature reads like a who’s who of modern comedy. But the real comedic genius? That looks to come from the film’s cuddly and adorable minions, and you’ll be able to solve puzzles alongside them even before the movie comes out thanks to Namco’s upcoming release Despicable Me: Minion Mania.

Despicable Me tells the story of Gru, a supervillain who wants to steal the moon. Like all good supervillains, Gru needs an army of evil-doers at his side. Gru’s army, however, is far cuter than it is menacing.

 Minion Mania

Players will guide Gru’s minions through 20 stages of puzzle platforming as they train for the big heist. Minions will be able to find and use a variety of gadgets around Gru’s secret labratory that will be used in solving puzzles.

We were given an early look at the upcoming Lite version and were pleased with the puzzling we saw. The two levels we experienced felt like an interesting blend of Lemmings and Toki Tori. You’ll control multiple minions that will interact with different aspects of the environment, but rather than assigning them a job and letting them get to it, Minion Mania has you controlling each minion individually. You may have one minion descend a platform to stand on a button that will open a door for a minion on the other side of the level, for example. The only concern we had was that the puzzling may prove a little too challenging for any younger gamers that may want to take part. However we won’t know for sure how the difficulty truly unfolds until the full game is released later this month.

 Minion Mania

While the film won’t be in theatres until July 9th, iPhone gamers will be able to pick up the full version of Despicable Me: Minion Mania on June 28th. What’s more, players wanting to get just a little taste will be able to check out the 2 level Lite version this upcoming Monday, June 7th.
