Monster Mayhem Preview

Ghosts and goblins and other scary creatures that go bump in the night aren’t something we need to worry about on a daily basis. You probably think that’s because they’re not real, but you’re wrong. The only thing keeping these monsters from interrupting your morning coffee and stepping into our everyday world is the graveyard Gate Keeper. In Chillingo’s upcoming castle defense action game Monster Mayhem, it’s up to you to keep those monsters at bay by any means necessary.

Monster Mayhem

Ghosts and goblins and other scary creatures that go bump in the night aren’t something we need to worry about on a daily basis. You probably think that’s because they’re not real, but you’re wrong. The only thing keeping these monsters from interrupting your morning coffee and stepping into our everyday world is the graveyard Gate Keeper. In Chillingo’s upcoming castle defense action game Monster Mayhem, it’s up to you to keep those monsters at bay by any means necessary.

Playing as the Gate Keeper, Monster Mayhem will task players with defending the graveyard gates from an onslaught of monsters that are trying to escape. Unlike other games in the genre, players won’t have access to defensive structures like turrets, pits or speed reduction zones. Instead players will need to take a more hands-on approach to battling the undead.

A quick study of the gameplay trailer reveals that, while Monster Mayhem may fall neatly under the category of castle defense, the gameplay will offer a unique ‘shooter’ approach to the normally strategy-heavy genre. Players will select from 7 different weapons and shoot with their finger as they attempt to bring an end to the monster madness. Pistols, grenades, flame throwers, and machetes are confirmed amongst the weapons of death. And while such instruments of violence may sound gruesome, things appear to remain relatively cartoony in nature. But let the squeamish be warned – even cartoony blood runs red!

The cutesy visuals also remind us a bit of Plants vs. Zombies, yet maintain a unique style all their own. The shooting elements seem to draw inspiration from popular Flash-based shooters like Graveyard Shift – a smart move for an iPhone-developed shooter. Still, such assumptions are little more than speculation until we get our hands on the final product.

Monster Mayhem

With 20 different monsters, 30 different stages, 5 boss battles and access to achievements via Chillingo’s social gaming platform, Monster Mayhem sounds as though it should launch with a good deal of meat on its bones. We shouldn’t have to wait too long to find out – Chillingo has promised us that the monsters will be breaking into the App Store soon!
