Fishdom: Frosty Splash is the Christmas version of Playrix’s popular match-3 game, Fishdom. The game follows in the footsteps of the Halloween-themed Fishdom: Spooky Splash, and the Thanksgiving-themed Fishdom: Harvest Splash, this time allowing you to decorate your fish tanks with holiday cheer.
Fishdom: Frosty Splash is the Christmas version of Playrix’s popular match-3 game, Fishdom. The game follows in the footsteps of the Halloween-themed Fishdom: Spooky Splash, and the Thanksgiving-themed Fishdom: Harvest Splash, this time allowing you to decorate your fish tanks with holiday cheer.
It’s worth mentioning that although this is a Christmas-themed game, the theme is understated. The music is precisely like all the other Fishdom games, with a slightly more cheerful melody, so there’s no Christmas music to be found. There is one fish dressed up for winter, and plenty of winter- and holiday-themed tank decorations, but other than that it’s much the same as the original Fishdom.
To play, you must clear increasingly complicated match -boards by swapping adjacent tiles to make matches over the golden background tiles. You can choose between timed and untimed game play, but overall the match-3 game play is challenging. The boards are large and unusually shaped, plus there are obstacles like locked and double locked tiles which must be matched in order to allow access to other sections of the playing field.
Making large combos earns you more cash, plus extra power-up tiles. For those of you who’ve played other Fishdom games, you’ll be familiar with these power ups. They include lots of explosives, like dynamite and bombs to clear sections of the board, and a lightning bolt that destroys all instances of a particular tile.Â
As with all Fishdom games, the real draw is getting to decorate fish tanks and raise virtual fish. With the cash you’ve earned by playing match-3 boards, you can purchase upgrades for your fish, and even additional tanks. There appears to be no limit on the number of tanks you can buy, with each tank starting out completely empty and ready for you to decorate in whatever way you choose. For each tank you can try to earn bronze, silver, and gold trophies by maxing out the fish, beauty, and comfort bars. The fish bar increases as you buy new fish, while the comfort bar increases by buying functional items like water filters and air pumps. The beauty bar increases as you buy decorative items and use them in your tank.
There are a few new fish this time, including a bundled up Christmas fish, but otherwise the fish seem very similar to the fish in Spooky Splash and Harvest Splash. Under the decoration tab there are a bunch of new plants to add to your tanks, like ice coral and cranberry water plants. There are also plenty of seasonal decorations, like Christmas stockings and a sleigh full of toys. As for the comfort items, those are the same as usual but are suitably decked out for the holidays, making the water filters look like chimneys, and the fish vitamins look like candy mints.
If you’re looking for a cute holiday themed game that the whole family can enjoy, than this might be a good choice. The production values are good, and the difficulty level is flexible enough to make the game suitable for all ages.
On the other hand, the game play is nearly identical to previously released Fishdom games. A few things were tweaked to make the game play more Christmas-themed, but otherwise it’s fair to say that Fishdom: Frosty Splash is simply a repackaged version of the original Fishdom.
