    Facebook video calling could lead to improved multiplayer gaming

    Just last week, I was playing a game of Vorp, a competitive action game on Facebook, with the developers. Most of the players were on Skype, and so we were able to both coordinate with team members and trash talk opponents. Video and voice chat is a common feature in many multiplayer games, and with today's news that Skype video calls are coming to Facebook, it could well become a common part of social games, too.

    When we first previewedVorp, the arcade shooter had just two of its four game modes available to play. One of those unreleased modes was DOtA (short for Defense of the Ancients, a popular mod for strategy gameWarcraft III), and ahead of release we had a chance to play a few rounds with the development team at End Games. The real-time multiplayer mode adds co-operative play to the experience, and a surprising amount of room for experimentation.

    Each and every year, hundreds of millions of video games are sold to consumers across the globe. Most of these titles are created for consoles like the PS3 and Xbox 360, requiring at least a year to create and often pushing that window to three years (or longer). The average price to create such a product now sits at a cool $20 million. Hundreds of developers toil on these products for thousands of man hours totally immersed in the game that they've created alongside their peers.
