Star Wars: The Old Republic Review

Apr 1, 2012, 9:23am

4.5

Three months can be a long time in the life of a young MMORPG, possibly long enough to make or break it in today's market. Star Wars: The Old Republic has made it past the 90-day mark – and sits on the cusp of its first truly significant content update – making it the perfect time to see if the Force truly is with BioWare's big budget foray into the genre.

May the Fourth Be With You: A look back at the casual games of Star Wars

May 4, 2011, 12:05pm

It’s that time of year again – the one day of the year when every nerd in your office has to make that terrible pun, “May the Fourth be with you.” We get it – you like Star Wars. You don’t need to make a thing about it. So the next time a watercooler Jedi comes up to you today and tries to tell you it's Star Wars Day, why not tell them how they can better spend their time: playing video games.

Mar 31, 2011, 1:45pm

Yesterday we reported that THQ would be pulling Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner from the App Store by April 1st, with all other THQ published Star Wars titles likely to follow suit. But like any good Star Wars saga, you didn’t really think it would end there, did you?

Will the dark side of licensing deals kill Star Wars on the App Store?

Mar 30, 2011, 12:56pm

THQ and Lucasfilm have had a pretty good run these past few years. Whether we’re talking about The Force Unleashed series for home consoles or the myriad of great iOS games on the App Store, these two companies have managed to make (mostly) sweet music together. Now it looks as though that relationship is turning sour, as a developer at Vertigore Games has confirmed that their THQ published Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner will be removed from the App Store by April 1st.

Star Wars: Imperial Academy Review

Dec 4, 2010, 5:54pm

2.5

Of all the characters from the Star Wars universe that you could play as in a video game, chances are the lowly Stormtroopers aren’t particularly high on your list. Sure they’re iconic and all, but mostly for being dimwitted blaster fodder. But in Star Wars Academy, a competitive first person shooter from ngmoco, that’s all you get to play as. And while the game features a great RPG-style upgrade system and lots of famous Star Wars locations, it’s also fraught with technical issues and a severe lack of options.

Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner Review

I can't be the only person who has spent many a moment attempting to replicate fighting off wave after wave of TIE Fighter attack by swinging around in an office chair, man-made sound effects accompanying every shot. The alarming fact on my part is, given I avoided Star Wars until I was 22, most of these re-enactments have taken place in full view of friends and family.

Seemingly out of nowhere, ngmoco has dropped another freemium title on the Canadian App Store tonight. Don’t expect to be doing too much farming or pet-raising here, though. Star Wars: Imperial Academy is a multiplayer first-person arena shooter that places you in the boots of a blaster-swinging Stormtrooper.

Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner Preview

Nov 8, 2010, 12:05pm

Whether you love them or you hate them, augmented reality games seem to have found a comfortable niche on the App Store. Despite their popularity though, nobody has thought to incorporate a popular license into one – that is, until now.

Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures Review

Oct 11, 2010, 1:23pm

3.5

Pretty much everyone who has ever watched a Star Wars film has imagined what it would be like to don the brown robes of the Jedi and wield a humming lightsaber. But being a Jedi means mastering a wide range of skills, something that the browser-based MMO Clone Wars Adventures exemplifies. The game has you taking on an incredibly wide range of tasks, from piloting a starship to reprogramming droids. But while Clone Wars Adventures maintains the look and feel of the series while featuring a large variety of mini-games, much of the content is locked away lest you splurge on a subscription.

Star Wars: The Battle For Hoth Review

Jul 18, 2010, 8:08am

Most tower defense games are over-simplified to the point of dullness nowadays. Set up towers, watch creeps follow a pre-determind path, and hope for the best. Every now and then you’ll upgrade a tower or buy a new one, but beyond that, tower defense had managed to become something of a spectator sport. The Battle For Hoth is looking to change all that, placing you in command of an army that needs your constant supervision.
