    On a scale of one to 10, the news that an Animal Crossing game was coming to mobile devices would probably break right through and head for the teens.Alas, it appears mobile gamers will have to settle for mild enthusiasm. Series mastermind Katsuya Eguchi recently told Joystiq that while he could see Animal Crossing mobile apps that would give players an extra way to manage some aspects of their towns, he doesn't think smartphones and tablets would be a good fit for a full game.While everyone knows Nintendo has been steadfast in its decision to avoid bringing its IPs to mobile, Animal Crossing would be a brand that could make a smooth transition. The name alone would probably cause a launch day stampede to the App Store and/or Google Play.

    If your head is still spinning from the realization that there's an Angry Birds RPG on the horizon, you'll want to sit down for this one. The game soft-launched in Canada and Australia last night, and after 30 minutes or so, we bumped into a pig that looked pretty darned familiar.Red hat. Moustache. Pipe. Mushrooms.     Nintendo gets criticized a lot for making the same games over and over. That's not really true; they make very different games that use the same characters and tones over and over. That's the Nintendo double-tap - their games look and feel like something we've seen a thousand times while throwing out the opportunity to build on what came before.That's the biggest problem with Steel Diver: Sub Wars, and my greatest fear for Nintendo's future forays into free-to-play.Let's back up. I'm getting ahead of myself by calling it "free-to-play." Actually, that may have been Nintendo.  Or maybe, rather than jumping the gun, they're simply behind the curve again.

    In the midst of their recent financial woes, Nintendo is currently looking at a great state of transition, or as others might even call it, a great state of turmoil. So to help get themselves out of this rut, the Mushroom Kingdom creators have been slowly investigating other areas of the industry, including the potential of game development on tablets and smartphones: something that most mobile gamers have been dying to hear for quite a while now.Maybe it's because of their bright and colorful worlds, or their quirky characters and lighthearted stories, but the general consensus has been that Nintendo games would just go hand-in-hand with the nature of mobile gaming. Well I'm not so sure."The last time we heard from the "Will they, won't they?" campaign, Nintendo has reiterated once again that the company will NOT be making their own mobile games going forward (but might still use the platform for certain kinds of game demos). However, they also recently announced their intentions to begin licensing some of Nintendo's biggest video game properties to outside parties, in addition to experimenting with a new operating system that would function in a similar way to what we have now with iOS or Android. And then of course, there's the whole spiel on potentially making educational Mario games on a Nintendo-manufactured Android tablet.

    Nintendo is experimenting with Android-based tablet for educational games

    Ever since mobile gaming has been on the rise, there is one thing that dedicated gamers always seem to be clamoring about, and with good reason: the want of a full-fledged Nintendo game like Mario or Pokémon on their tablet or smartphone. Of course, Nintendo has always stood firm in their message that something like this would never be a reality. But now it looks like Nintendo might actually be making their first baby steps into the world of mobile: although not in the way that most Nintendo fans might have expected.In a series of tweets that were sent out earlier this week, Nintendo software engineer Nando Monterazo has revealed that the Big N might be working on a line of tablet devices for use in schools to play educational games. Monterazo also went on to clarify a few of the finer details about this announcement in the same batch of tweets, stating that the experimental Nintendo tablet will be powered by Android, and that the primary educational games will be featuring recognizable Nintendo characters."Unfortunately, Monterazo also confirmed that we wouldn't be seeing any NES, SNES, or Game Boy games cropping up on the tablet at any time, and reemphasized the fact that the new device will strictly be for educational purposes only. Nintendo has been pretty adamant in the past that we would never see officially licensed Nintendo games on any mobile platform, but then again, they were also extremely hesitant to embrace the world of online gaming once upon a time, and look how that turned out for them lately.Do you think this new educational Android-based tablet will be a precursor for Nintendo to start experimenting with the prospects of more console-quality mobile game development in the future?
