Indiegogo Picks: Elliot Quest

Jun 18, 2013

It seems like everywhere I turn these days, there’s another new 8-bit adventure that’s set on bringing me back to the days of playing The Legend of Zelda in my parent’s basement as a kid. But there’s a very good reason for this steady influx of new-age retro-inspired adventures: it’s because they were all just so seriously awesome, and Elliot Quest looks to be just as awesome as the rest.

Indiegogo Picks: The Black Tower

Jun 6, 2013

I’ve played through Final Fantasy VII at least ten times since its release in 1997.  Unfortunately, no matter how much you love making the journey beyond Midgar, the trip gets harder every year.  The clunky controls, abstract graphics, and “active” time battles have not held up over the years, leaving fans with a nostalgic fondness for a game they can no longer enjoy.  The creators of The Black Tower share that nostalgia, but acknowledge it’s 2013 with their “neo-retro” homage to one of Square’s finest, and PS1 RPGs in general.

Indiegogo Picks: Ghost of a Tale

May 7, 2013

PC

Inspired by movies like Winnie the Pooh, The Dark Crystal, The Secret of Nimh, Disney's Robin Hood and games like Zelda, Ico and Dark Souls, Ghost of a Tale is intended to be a "small yet beautiful game" with stylized characters and environments that look like movie sets, but that retains "a certain simplicity and immediacy" of gameplay. What's all that mean? In short, it's a fantasy adventure game starring a mouse, who undertakes a perilous journey to the Island of Periclave, a place rumored to abound with treasure - and be haunted by monsters!

Indiegogo Picks: Mad Birds

Apr 24, 2013

Calling all disco fans: have we found the game for you! Mad Birds is the first ever handmade interactive music video clip, brought to you by the Israeli electro-dance band, Terry Poison, who hails from Tel Aviv. The game is described by the band as “Angry Birds + acid + sequins,” and I’m not really sure that I even need to continue with this preview now after typing something like that.

Indiegogo Picks: Ghost of a Tale

Apr 18, 2013

PC

In the real world, mice are basically the wild equivalent of popcorn. Owls, foxes, cats, and even some miserably giant species of spiders snack on the wee rodents to whet their appetites for juicier prey. In fiction, however, mice are a little better at standing up for themselves. Consider novels and comics like Redwall, Mice Templar, and Secret of NIMH. Now a brave little mouse is being given a chance to shine through an action adventure game called Ghost of a Tale—provided said game is funded via Indiegogo.

Indiegogo Picks: Riot

Mar 1, 2013

Despite how much progress the human race has made in recent years, there’s no denying the fact that political strife and unrest still exists in all parts of the world today. And there is so much more behind these violent economic riots than what we see on TV or read about on the Internet. Well now we have an ambitious riot simulator game to shed some light on those unspoken questions, like “What is it that triggers such a strife?” and “What does a cop feel during the conflict?”

Indiegogo Picks: Flirt Planet

Feb 15, 2013

I didn’t have the best of luck when it came to dating in high school and throughout most of college. I was always the shy kid, content with sitting in the corner at parties, wearing my graphic band tees and fiddling around on my flip phone. That’s why the idea of a social dating game like Flirt Planet that caters towards shy people seems so cool, and so long overdue! Where was this game when I was in high school?!

Indiegogo Picks: Mimpi

Feb 8, 2013

Dogs see the world in black and white (well, actually, muddy shades of yellow and grey), but are their dreams as dully-colored as their waking vision? It’s impossible to know for sure; we can’t simply ask our canine friends, as their responses probably wouldn’t go far beyond “Woof!”. That said, there’s nothing wrong with adopting Silicon Jelly’s optimistic world view and assuming that dogs dream in fantastic shades of pink and white.

Indiegogo Picks: (un)Lucky7

Jan 25, 2013

(un)Lucky7 is the latest in a line of promising indie titles to ask for funding on Indiegogo. In the story-driven JRPG-like puzzle game with horror and sci-fi elements, you play as Moro, one of seven prisoners who have been sentenced to life for their past crimes in the galaxy. However, one day their fortunes start to turn, as the seemingly lucky 7 are promised freedom in return for testing out a new spaceship that’s powered by an experimental engine, and exploring the unknown.

Indiegogo Picks: Crystal Kingdom

Jan 11, 2013

Although obviously inspired by the classic, 16-bit JRPGs of decades past, Crystal Kingdom will be a brand-new and completely unique game. It's also an ambitious project, despite being developed by fans, with top-notch art, online multiplayer action and a list of potential features that would make most veteran developers blush. Even so, a number of gameplay demonstration videos floating around on YouTube make it look very much like the real deal.
