In the beginning, there was a vast wasteland of interactive nothingness.  And so Man created the video game.  Man then got tired of playing space shooters and sword-wielding heroes, so he created the god game.  One in-game, all-powerful planet spirit got tired of running everything, so he created the Reus: the eponymous Giant designed to do the bidding of the planet through manual labor and you, the player whose not-so-distant ancestor invented the video game.

In the future, man will return to the moon. He will build bases there, and colonies. He will claim it for his own. And, as sure as night follows day because that's just how humanity rolls, pretty soon some other jerk will do exactly the same thing: and the next thing you know, it's a fight. So goes the setup in Moon Rising, a game described as "in the mold of" classics like Advanced Wars and Laser Squad, but with a few interesting twists of its own.

Am I the only one who’s a little sick and tired of the term “dungeon crawler”? I mean, these dank and treasure-filled caves are just lurking with bats and spiders and other nasty creatures at every turn, so why not make a serious break for it as soon as you get inside? Get in and get out with that treasure is what I say!

Spoiler alert: the future sucks. World governments have crumbled, and humanity itself was on the verge of extinction until a monumental discovery snatched us from the brink. Now, new forms of energy allow us to live in tightly-packed cities, but the scarcity of resources and the breakdown of law and order have made people pretty grabby. Dark District for iOS is a clan building/strategy game that’s all about protecting what’s yours—and taking what belongs to your neighbor.

World of Western is the kind of social strategy game that you'd expect a guy like me to love. I might be fat and chained to a computer during most of my waking hours these days, but once upon a time I was a cowboy on the ranches of Texas – spurs, chaps, and even a slightly bowlegged walk. Alas, this is no Red Dead Redemption. World of Western's heart is in the right place, what with its rifle toting buckaroos and friendly Native Americans patrolling digital Tombstones, but in execution it bears far too many resemblances to the many other city-building-meets-combat games that have been popping up on Facebook lately.

Striking a balance between depth and accessibility has often been a hassle in strategy RPGs. Some games aren’t deep enough and others are too difficult. A select few games take the Goldilocks route and are just right. Rebirth of Fortune 2 comes close to finding that balance, but slow-paced battles and imbalanced multiplayer take away from what is otherwise a fun experience.

I like a good fantasy role-playing game as much as anyone, but sometimes you just get that craving for a different setting. Like, any other setting. And while there are alternatives out there, not many involve leading a group of explorers through the New World of the 16th Century. Expeditions: Conquistador will do just that come May 30, turning the search for El Dorado into a tactical RPG for PC, Mac or Linux computers.

The squad-based tactical shooter is a familiar face on the PC, but iOS evangelists don’t often get to savor it on their platform of choice.  The recent release of the uniquely challenging Frozen Synapse on iPad proves that not only can tactics games exist on the portable platform, but they can also thrive there.

Anomaly 2 is a well-polished and intense addition to the unusual "tower offense" sub-genre, but while its new "convoy-versus-towers" multiplayer twist is an interesting idea, in execution it leaves a little bit to be desired.
