Escape the Museum 2 Review

When I first sat down to play Gogii Games' Escape the Museum 2 I was expecting to have to, well, escape a museum. Again. And I wasn't terribly thrilled about it. I mean, how many games can you make about escaping an earthquake-ravaged museum before the premise starts to feel contrived and repetitive? I think the answer is probably "one." Imagine my delight upon discovering that the follow-up to Escape the Museum isn't about getting out of a museum at all, but rather about a father heroically making his way through disaster-torn streets in the aftermath of the quake towards the museum to save his trapped family - in other words, a totally different spin on the same theme!

The Return of Monte Cristo Review

The Return of Monte Cristo brings back Alexander Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo's Edmond Dante for another hidden object adventure in which he searches for his fiancée's killer. The detectives closed the case without ever finding a suspect, so Dante travels from Spain to Paris in this game with beautiful art work and effects in this clichéd, but eye-pleasing game.

Ever walk in on the middle of a movie and find yourself hopelessly lost, but still enjoying yourself? That's what playing Lost Realms: The Curse of Babylon is like if you didn't play the previous game, Lost Realms: Legacy of the Sun Princess. You'll have a hard time following the plot, but you'll be having such a good time on your adventure that you won't really mind.

Murder, She Wrote Review

It seems like a match made in heaven: a hidden-object game ("HOG") that has you scouring for clues and solving puzzles to unravel a murder mystery, all based on the coveted Murder, She Wrote television series that ran from 1984 to 1996.

Now available for the PC and Mac, Legacy Interactive's Murder, She Wrote does stay truthful to the long-running show - thanks to excellent writing, plot twists and good voice-acting (led by a convincing Angela Lansbury sound-a-like) - but the fun object-finding puzzles and mini-games also hold their own, even without the MSW association.

Kellie Stanford: Turn of Fate Review

Kellie Stanford: Turn of Fate is a humorous adventure game with quirky cartoon graphics and some hidden object game play in the mix. Maybe it's just the tropical music or the occasional monkey, but I was catching a clear Monkey Island influence towards the second half of the game, too.

The Tudors Review

The Tudors is a hidden object game based on the television drama of the same name that follows the reign of Henry VIII, the English king best known for founding the Anglican church and having six wives, two of whom were eventually beheaded.

The game starts right after King Henry has wed his third wife, Jane Seymour a mere two weeks after the execution of his second wife, Anne Boleyn. You play a young maiden named Elena Sedgrave who gets caught up in palace intrigue. After she saves the life of one of Henry's men, the king asks her to accompany her father William Sedgrave on various diplomatic missions to the other kingdoms of Europe, where she is to serve as the king's personal spy.

Nancy Drew: The White Wolf of Icicle Creek Review

It's very hard to describe the Nancy Drew series of games as "average." On the whole, Her Interactive releases consistent quality and writing. So if in describing Nancy Drew: The White Wolf of Icicle Creek as a "below-average" Nancy Drew title, know that it is still far better than many games out there.

Hidden Magic Review

Two mages, Gabriel and Anna, live happily in a small house in the forest. One fateful day, however, when one of them stepped away from home, sinister goblins broke in and kidnapped the other mage. And so you must decide to play as Gabriel or Anna and work towards rescuing your loved one by searching for clues, solving puzzles and fighting evil.

Such is the premise behind Hidden Magic, an excellent hidden object game (HOG) with an engaging story, multiple gameplay elements and tons of replayability because of many modes, unlockable content and randomly-placed items in levels. Not everyone might like the combat mechanic, but it certainly takes the HOG genre in a new direction.

10 Days to Save the World Review

In 10 Days under the Sea, Diana and her sister found an amulet. The sequel, 10 Days to Save the World, picks up two years after these events, when people begin to suspect that the amulet could be causing the cataclysms like flooding in Africa and a drought in Venice. Diana must work with her father, an archaeologist, to figure out how to save the world. Although, the story gets lost and barely registers a sense of urgency, the diversity of puzzles in the hidden object adventure game keeps you engrossed.

Scratches - Director's Cut Review

Scratches: Director's Cut is a horror game, but not the kind that relies on cheap scares to spook players. Instead, it depends on atmosphere and subtle details to unnerve, and, despite a few stumbles along the way, it does a great job.

The game stars Michael Arthate, a horror author struggling to finish his second novel. In an attempt to isolate himself from the world and complete his book, he takes up residence in a large estate in a small, rural town in England. Unfortunately for him, the house has a long, dark history involving a grizzly murder by a crazed husband. Eventually he gets tangled up in a story that could've been ripped from one of his novels, which all begins when he starts hearing noises around the house: the titular scratches.

Hostile Makeover Review

Hostile Makeover is a hidden object game based off Ellen Byerrum's chick-lit mystery novel and the Lifetime television movie by the same name. While the twisty plot is heavily inspired by both, the game's storyline takes off in a few new directions of its own.

Like the book and movie, the game's protagonist is sassy Lacey Smithsonian, a fashion reporter and writer for the Eye Street Observer. When someone starts shooting bullets instead of photos, Lacey becomes a witness to murder. The victim, Amanda Manville, was a popular model and fashion designer with her fair share of enemies.

Danger Next Door: Miss Teri Tale's Adventure Review

I can't count the number of times I've been disappointed by a sequel that make the same mistakes as the game that came before it in the series with no effort to improve. Or worse, a sequel that's actually less fun than its predecessor. I'm very happy to report that Danger Next Door: Miss Teri Tale doesn't fall into that trap. Episode three of the Miss Teri Tale series, which up to this point has been lackluster, is bursting with newfound style and creativity.

When we catch up with Teri at the beginning of the game, she's now the mayor of Peeking Town and has made Monty deputy mayor. Unfortunately, however, Monty is found dead at a party thrown by Mike, the town's newest resident, and Teri offers to help solve the crime.

It was bound to happen eventually. After releasing three increasingly wonderful episodes, the Tales of Monkey Island series has finally taken a step back. Now that's not to say that Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 4 - The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood is bad -- far from it in fact -- it's just that, for the first time, the latest entry in the series isn't the best.

Big City Adventure: New York Review

Hidden object game Big City Adventure: New York City is rather a lot like Manhattan itself: very large and with an overwhelming number of things to see and do.
Trapped Review

The thought of being kidnapped or trapped without escape is a viable fear for most people. In the latest title from Gogii Games, you'll play the role of victim Helene as she tries to find a way of escape before her killer closes in on her. But making a casual horror game is notoriously tricky business. Does Trapped: The Abduction have the makings of a truly great and scary game?

Yet another Agatha Christie mystery has gone interactive with I-play's Agatha Christie: Dead Man's Folly, the third hidden-object game (HOG) in the series, following Death on the Nile and Peril at End House.

Nat Geo Games: Mystery of Cleopatra Review

Imagine Mystery of Cleopatra as an Agatha Christie murder mystery that takes place at Cleo's palace during her reign. Instead of playing Hercule Poirot or Jane Marple, you're the queen's trusted advisor who investigates the murder of a Roman solider by piecing together hidden objects and masterminding puzzles. This is the second game from National Geographic and Merscom following Lost City of Z that shows no improvement over its predecessor.

Hidden Expedition: Devil's Triangle Review

Having already braved the Amazon and conquered Everest, where does an intrepid adventurer go next? In Hidden Explorer: Devil's Triangle, the organization H.E.A.T. (the Hidden Expedition Adventure Team) has sent you - its top explorer - to investigate the disappearance of a pilot who went down while flying through the treacherous Bermuda Triangle.

Predictably, things start to go sideways from the moment you enter the mysterious triangle. After a submarine accident, you find yourself on an uncharted island that happens to be inhabited! I'll stop there so as not to spoil anything, but rest assured the story takes plenty of intriguing twists and turns.

When people think of art and the great masters of the canvas, the typical setting is quiet and calm galleries where the paintings hang still and silent. Yet in Meridian93's new title Hidden World of Art 2, police, cunning thieves, adn the FBI cross paths with classic paintings in a delightful story of when calm and thrills combine.

Ghost Town Mysteries: Bodie Review

There's a theory that ghosts are those whose lives were cut short before they could realize their potential. If that's the case, the developers at Gaming Hungama might want to keep the Ghostbusters number handy, as Ghost Town Mysteries: Bodie is the mangled remains of a promising concept, struck down by poor choices that killed what might, if treated more gently, have produced a star in the hidden object genre.

First the good: a fresh and interesting concept. Take a real ghost town and the story of a real ghost-a little girl said to be the region's "guardian angel." Give her a story worthy of a blockbuster movie. One hundred years ago, she witnessed a crime, and shortly afterwards was killed violently. Was it an accident-or murder?

The Dracula Files Review

Most of us are familiar with the story of vampire Count Dracula, whether from reading Bram Stoker's famous book or watching the numerous films based on it. The Dracula Files, a new hidden object game from eGames, puts a modern spin on the tale.

The game starts with a brief synopsis of the climax of Bram Stoker's Dracula novel, where Dracula is defeated by Jonathan and Mina Harker and vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing. Years pass, Jonathan and Mina's descendants move to America, and the current generation of Harkers, siblings Michael and Quinn, doesn't think Dracula is anything more than a fairytale.

Insider Tales: The Secret of Casanova Review

Repetition has become so common in hidden object games that we've simply learned to accept it. We head into each new game knowing that we'll likely be fed a handful of scenes filled with the same objects to find over and over again. This is unfortunate because it need not be so, as proven by Insider Tales: The Secret of Casanova, a HOG that makes a point of ensuring that the player is constantly challenged with new and interesting environments and activities.

Delaware St. John: The Town with No Name Review

Good sequels can unfortunately be hard to come by, and creating frightening adventure games that actually possess suspense can be equally difficult to make. The second installment in the Delaware St. John series, Delaware St. John: The Town with No Name, attempts to be a scary adventure game sequel, but unfortunately fails to overcome the difficult nature of the genre.

Little Things Review

My opinion of Little Things, a hidden-object game with lovely art and refreshingly straightforward game design, wavered between like and dislike the entire time I played. In the end, I came down pretty much smack in the middle, which is bothersome because it feels like the sort of game a person ought to have a strong feeling about one way or another.

Most hidden object games provide players with a realistic scene littered with scores of random objects positioned to blend in with the environment in clever ways. That's not the case here. In Little Things, the objects for which we are hunting actually form the greater picture.

Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 3 - Lair of the Leviathan Review

While the previous two chapters in the continuing saga of Mighty Pirate Guybrush Threepwood all took place either at sea or on land, the third chapter of Tales of Monkey Island goes somewhere completely unexpected: inside of a giant manatee. That's right, the majority of Threepwood's latest outing Lair of the Leviathan takes place inside of a hapless sea creature, which makes for plenty of amusing situations, in what is easily the best entry in the series to date.

Reincarnations: Awakening Review

While personal beliefs regarding reincarnation may differ dramatically, have you ever wondered who or what you could have been in a "past life?" What if you had a chance to find out and experience it all for yourself? This is exactly what happens to a professional copywriter named Jane as she searches for answers and personal knowledge in the new hidden object adventure Reincarnations: Awakening, brought to you by Vogat Interactive.

Jane is a prominent copywriter whose work typically revolves around writing on the subject of makeup and fashion. However she's looking to expand her horizons, and jumps at the opportunity when a major magazine offers her a chance to write the article of a lifetime on the subject of reincarnation.

Destination: Treasure Island Review

There is certainly no shortage of pirate-themed adventure games available, which makes it tough to stand out from the pack. And though Destination: Treasure Island has a few interesting ideas, it ends up as nothing more than a competent, slightly generic, swashbuckling adventure.

The story follows retired pirate Jim Hawkins, formerly Long John Silver's right-hand man. Despite having been out of the plundering business for several years, Jim gets a blast from the past in the form of a visit from Long John Silver's parrot, who informs him that he has been left some buried treasure. Choosing the only sensible option, Jim lifts anchor and sets forth in search of the riches.

The saga of mighty pirate Guybrush Threepwood continues in this second chapter of the Tales of Monkey Island series, which takes place directly after the events of the previous game. And though The Siege of Spinner Cay plays and looks identical to the first game in the series, it ends up being a much more enjoyable experience thanks to some clever -- and very funny -- writing and much more intuitive puzzles.

Romance of Rome Review

As you play the hidden object game Romance of Rome, many thoughts will go through your head. Thoughts like "This hand-drawn art is exceptionally lovely," and "How wonderful that the items are era-appropriate," or "Hey, neat, I get to have a dog!" But the one thought that is more likely to run through your mind far more often than any other is undoubtedly, "Holy crap, this game is hard!"

PuppetShow: Mystery of Joyville Review

At first, PuppetShow: Mystery of Joyville's seems like many other hidden object games. Its story, about a detective being called in to find a missing child, isn't all that unusual, and its setting of a town in decline provides the locations and background that you might expect. What it does with those elements, however, is startling, disturbing, and absolutely wonderful.

Becky Brogan: The Mystery of Meane Manor Review

High school student Becky Brogan has a knack for solving puzzles, and wants to be a detective some day. Her curiosity leads her to investigate a supposedly haunted mansion for a school research project, and she quickly discovers that Meane Manor does indeed have its share of sinister secrets. These secrets are yours to discover in this back-to-basics hidden object game.

Becky Brogan: Mystery of Meane Manor definitely has an old-school feel to it that long-time fans of hidden object games will recognize. The scenes are extremely cluttered, and the goal is simply to hunt for all of the items on the list. Unlike most of the older games, however, there's no time limit to stress you out as you're hunting.

The Stolen Diamond Ring Review

Sometimes, it's nice to curl up and read a good book. But when was the last time you could play a book? In The Stolen Diamond Ring, a new title in the emerging "visual novel" genre, you are really interacting with a novel rather than a game, but its premise is definitely interesting, and worth more than a quick glance.

Gardenscapes Review

I love it when I feel game makers working hard to engage my interest. That's exactly the way I felt while playing Gardenscapes, a new hidden object game from Playrix Entertainment that sports top notch presentation, great art, and game design that kept me perpetually wanting to play just one more puzzle.

The game begins with the player inheriting a mansion behind which sits a once resplendent garden. With the help of the butler, Austin, your job is to restore the garden to its former glory by purchasing a wide variety of ready-made elements, ranging from shrubs and gazebos to birdcages and mini-golf holes.

Magic Academy II Review

Aspiring magic student Irene, whose strange disappearance was the subject of the first Magic Academy game, now has a mystery of her own to solve in Magic Academy II, an uneven hidden object follow-up from Nevosoft that retreads much of the same ground as the original.

Irene wants to serve on the Magic Academy's council like her sister Annie, but she hasn't chosen a good time to apply. The council is in turmoil after a valuable and dangerous document goes missing - and the rumor floating around is that it was stolen by one of the other council members.

Save Our Spirit Review

Looking for the Next Big Thing in hidden object games (HOGs)? Save Our Spirit isn't it.

While this new casual game provides a lot of challenging game-play, it's also a frustrating experience due to tricky (and sometimes unfair) puzzles and other shortcomings. As a result, what could have been a highly-polished and deep HOG ends up as a mediocre experience that's not really worth your time or money.

Travel League: The Missing Jewels Review

These days, hidden object games tend to fall into two categories: those that make a valiant effort to innovate within a genre that has already been thoroughly explored, and those that come off as a little more than an attempt to cash in on our obsession to search for stuff in crowded pictures. Travel League: The Missing Jewels is, unfortunately, a member of the latter group.

Players take on the role of Alex, a young woman enlisted to help find the stolen jewels of an ancient and mysterious group known as the Travel League, of which her grandfather is a longtime member. She travels to cities around the globe, talking to locals who provide information on what has happened to each piece.

The Shivah Review

When a game comes along that features a rabbi as the lead character, you can't help but do a double-take. In The Shivah, a point-and-click adventure game from Wadjet Eye Games, that's just what you'll do.

You play as Rabbi Russell Stone, a man whose faith is dwindling almost as fast as his congregation. One evening after services, Stone is visited by a policeman, who tells him that a former member of his synagogue, Jack Lauder, has been killed. Apparently, Lauder left Stone a large sum of money, but Stone doesn't understand why Lauder would have left anything to him after the falling out they had years ago. Thus begins the mystery.
