Game Review

By Chuck Miller

Frequently, descriptions accompanying new games include a good dose of hyperbole, exaggerated promises and more. Phrases like "stunning artwork, enveloping music and prose worthy of the masters" are spun by marketing mavens you'd swear have never even seen the title they're hawking. On occasion, however, the "overstated" is actually true.

That's the case with Dream Chronicles from KatGames and PlayFirst. In this instance, "gorgeous Art Nouveau artwork, mesmerizing music and a gripping storyline" accurately illustrate the experience that lies ahead.

So, what is Dream Chronicles? It's best described as a casual cousin to epic, hard-core adventures like Myst and Uru. A mix of fantasy and reality, its hypnotic dreamland engages you in a larger-than-life quest, a mystery that needs to be solved one puzzle at a time as the story unfolds around you.

Lilith, Fairy Queen of Dreams, has imprisoned the hamlet of Wish under a slumber spell affecting everyone but you, a mortal named Faye. Your task is to locate Fidget, your missing husband, banish the enchantment cast by Lilith and wake your daughter, Lyra, reuniting your family in the process. But, all you have to start with is a diary left by Fidget detailing his secret past and the path to be followed. Why did Lilith cast this spell? What happened to Fidget? What's transpired in years past? These are some of the questions you need to unravel.

In traditional adventure form, your quest in Dream Chronicles is accomplished location by location. Each scene, 32 in all, incorporates one or more puzzles to be solved, with thorough investigation crucial to advancing. Some objects are quite easy to spot while others are more subtle and require greater scrutiny (important objects "glint" after a while to help in locating them). Doors, drawers, buttons, switches, wall hangings, toys, books, keys, crystals and other items of various shapes and sizes all come into play.

Interaction is simple. Clicking items place them in your inventory at the bottom of the screen. Once there, you can use them on other objects and combine them to solve the various conundrums encountered. However, unlike most hard-core adventures, you never lug around any unnecessary inventory items here. All objects needed for a puzzle's solution are found and used in the same scene. Solve the poser at hand and you unlock the "door" to the next location.

What kind of puzzlers can you expect to come across? A good mix, actually. Some require you to arrange objects in a specific order or follow a particular sequence, others involve combining items to achieve a goal and many entail using one object "on" another to effect a change of some sort. Let's consider a few examples.

In one scene, you need to locate several photos scattered about a room and hang them back on the wall. Once each is hung, a musical tune is played. In traditional Simon fashion, you must reproduce each tune on a piano, note-for-note in the correct order, to solve the puzzle. In a different location, you need water to wash dirt off a key you unearthed before it can be used to open a door. This requires combining the objects necessary to retrieve a pail of water from a well. In still another instance, you must converse with a carnivorous plant and convince it to let you pass so you can continue your adventure.

You have another task to perform, as well. Besides solving each puzzle, you must also gather a collection of special Dream Pieces hidden in each scene. These sparkling gems, totaling 115, are automatically incorporated into Dream Jewels (settings) contained in your diary. While not required to complete the quest, they do add extra points towards your high score (and generate medals for registered PlayFirst players). For every Dream Piece collected, you earn 1,000 points. A built-in leaderboard lets you know how well you played compared to other adventurers locally (on your computer) and online.

Dream Chronicles has all the necessary ingredients of an exceptional game, one that lives up to its marketing hype. Art Nouveau graphics are beautifully rendered, an ethereal soundtrack helps bring the world to life, its engaging narrative draws you into the story and diverse puzzles of varying difficulty keep play interesting and challenging.

The only shortcomings in this grand adventure are the inability to revisit a previous location (in case you missed a Dream Piece or two) and a slightly too-brief encounter. The quest was so enjoyable I wish it would have lasted longer (it took just under four hours my first time through and two the second time). But, depending on your experience with adventure games, mileage will vary. Adding another scene or two, specifically with the conversation puzzle type, would have improved the overall experience and extended play. These deficiencies, however, are minor and don't preclude awarding a perfect score.

In short, solving Dream Chronicles' mysteries is a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Place it at the top of your list of must-play games for 2007 and hope that a sequel will follow. For most casual gamers, it's a dream come true.

Just wondering if anyone else is stuck in the piano room. I got all 7 pics on the wall and the crank put into the piano. I found the crowbar but when I try to use it on the loose floorboard nothing happens. Am I missing something? Someone PLEASE help. Thanks so much, Kim

Posted by: Kimberly at June 12, 2007 06:32 AM

Hi Kim,

There is a loose floorboard on the left in the 'step area'. Just jiggle around. You will find it.

Good luck.

C.

Posted by: Chrizzy at June 12, 2007 11:18 AM

You need to use it on the piano, then you will get something to use on the floorboard.

After that I am stuck, It says that I need to put everyone watching but I have no idea how to do so

Posted by: Nuno at June 12, 2007 11:53 AM

Hi, am stuck on the doghouse and parents' backdoor. Anyone figured out where the rope is? I tried to cut the rope ladder with the scissors, but no luck. Help, thanks!

Posted by: Cee at June 12, 2007 12:02 PM

Hey Cee, you definitely have to cut the rope with the scissors and then place the rope on the well along with the bucket and the crank. once you lower the bucket into the well and it comes back full of water dip the key in it to clean it and then click on the door and it will open.

To the people stuck with the piano problem once you find both keys and put them in their proper place( one key is in the floor) just unlock both pieces, find all the pictures and hang them on the wall. Once all your pictures are on the wall, click on them, listen to the music and then click on the piano, when the piano pic enlarges click on the crank and duplicate the song and do that for each picture. For each picture you have to duplicate the keys that were played in the correct order to be able to finish that level.

Good Luck, I hope you guys can understand what I wrote

Posted by: margie at June 12, 2007 01:01 PM

Thank you, Margie. That helped. What about Tangle's private library - do you know the order of the cards on the symbol wall? I've switched it around and nothing is happening.

Posted by: Cee at June 12, 2007 01:26 PM

Hey Cee, I don't remember the order but I do know that you have to click on the wall with the symbols for them to go full screen. The symbols if I remember correctly almost go on the opposite end of each other.
Example: male symbol goes opposite of the female symbol and so on.Just click on them until they fall into place, if the symbol shows up red, then you have to move it until it glows white.

I am stuck on chapter 17 where there's a room with 4 buttons that light up the room. I just can't figure it out. If anyone could help it would be appreciated.

Posted by: margie at June 12, 2007 01:51 PM

I actually finished the game, I couldn't figure out level 17. I knew it had to be a sequence of lights but I wasn't sure in which order but I'm finally done.

CORRECTION ON THE PIANO ROOM>
I didn't mean 2 keys, I meant a key and a crank go in the piano.

Posted by: margie at June 12, 2007 05:19 PM

Hallo, am stuck again. I've got all the flower tiles in except for a yellow circle shape. Am clicking everywhere to drop it in without any luck. There is something glinting on top of the 4 yellow circles already in place, but when I drop it there, nothing. I've got the red, green and purple leaves all set. Help. Thanks again!

Posted by: Cee at June 12, 2007 07:29 PM

cee on level 17 if you watch how many times the lights come on, do them in order
one switch makes the light come on for a short period or one flash
another switch makes it flash twice
another makes it flash three times
and finally the fourth switch makes it flash four times...do them in order....i was hung on that for awhile as well

Posted by: Roger at June 13, 2007 02:58 AM

Hello Cee,

I hope this helps you:

-Without taking any items, click on the middle yellow circle.
-For about a second you'll see the floor.
-Pay attention to the empty slots on the floor, you should see where that yellow circle belongs.

Cheers!

Thank you everyone for the suggestions and help.

Miguel: I finally got the yellow circle in! Great game, congratulations!

Roger: I will try that sequence and see if I can get up those stairs.

Is it me or has no one else spotted this as a blatant rip-off of Dreamfall: The Longest Journey from FunCom?

Seems like there could be legal issues with this a la "Snowy's Lunch Rush".

Posted by: Alex at June 13, 2007 05:29 PM

Lucky: blatant rip-off of The longest Journey? You can't be serious: I would love to hear what the similarities are (apart from both being adventure games).

Click on the stairs and a something will happen. Repeat that sequence and part of the stairs will move. You'll have to repeat this 4 times and then you'll to have access to the first floor, then take the pictures and place them where they correspond.

drop it in the book then click the crystal ball.

Posted by: Russell at June 20, 2007 06:47 AM

This is a great game that lives up to the review. The ending was a disappointment, but I guess it leaves room for a next installation if there is one. The game is a bit shorter than most as well. I love the hidden object game genre, but this was with a creative twist.

Or, could it be just that as the title suggests, this was all a dream and Faye, Fidget and Lyra are fine and living happily ever after in Wish? Thoughts, anyone??

For those stuck, best to check Mark's suggestion regarding the PlayFirst forum.

Posted by: Cee at June 21, 2007 12:54 PM

How do you the very last chapter? I don't get how you do the 4 puzzles on the wall.

Posted by: ElleEm at June 21, 2007 06:19 PM

Hey, this is a great game, makes you think and it's fun, all except for the ending. After completing the last puzzle,Faye go to touch Fidget then ...nothing! They find themselves somewhere else is what is written, but that's it, no rescuing their daughter,or finding Fidget's parents,or even a little reunion, it just goes straight to scores, and that is certainly a big let down, after solving all those puzzles without any hints whatsoever,it really really was disappointing, and as some others say, it was a bit short, other than that though,it's brilliant and fun.

Posted by: Satin at June 22, 2007 01:08 PM

My game seems to be glitchy. I can't repair the bridge to the treehouse. When I try to saw the boards it only allows me to saw the ones nearby but not the furthest board. When I try to saw it the message says "nothing happens" and I've noticed that the saw indicates three uses by the number "3" on it when you get it but I use it twice and the number drops to "2" and then to nothing. I don't ever get a "1". It won't let me saw three times and it won't allow me to saw the far board at all no matter what order I try to saw them in.

I've read the walk-through to see if I'm missing some trick and I don't see one pertaining to this part of the game. Its pretty straightforward but my game is not working.

Posted by: Julie at July 24, 2007 11:29 AM

I have encountered glitches too. First was the same glitch as Julie. I had to uninstall and reinstall twice before the wheel would attach. Current glitch is in the library. The world globe won't go on it's stand. Am I missing something here or do I have to uninstall and reinstall yet again! Also no crystals for inserting into the book - they all went the same way as the rest.

whatever do you do with the plant pots? !!! driving me crazy!

Posted by: jan nolan at July 25, 2007 04:52 PM

I'm not sure if the game is glitchy or just very unforgiving when it comes to where you click. You must wait for the words to appear and then click on the exact spot. I had the worst time with digging the holes. I'd find "loose earth" and then have to creep my mouse around literally pixel by pixel before finding the words again. Also, the point of your cursor has to be where you want to place something. So the item often appears below where you eventually want it to be.
All that being said, I thought it was a great game.

Posted by: Margaret at July 25, 2007 05:19 PM

veds, go to the pitcure click on one the go to the piano watch it play the notes of the song then you play the same notes on the key's with your mouse.Do this with each pitcure. You will then get out of the house.Hope this helps I am now at the next chapter my self.As for Julie and Jan when you download turn off your exclerator if you have one, I have had to on some games try that hope it works for all.

Posted by: Carson at July 26, 2007 07:04 PM

I cannot get the lights to stay on in level 17, con someone help? For those with the puppet issues, each puppet head is labeled queen, king, jester...you have to put the heads on the right bodies. The queen is to the very right, the king next too her, the jester next the girl night (gold) then the other and the gate should open. If you need any help with it just email me

Posted by: Andi at July 26, 2007 09:43 PM

Wendy; if you are using Firefox you'd need this Flash player: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

The game probably crashes because a flash movie is about to be shown and maybe your Flash driver is not updated. That's why I asked you to try this out. Let me know if it worked please.

Cheers,

Miguel

I also updated flash player on both but it still wouldn't work when I tried to access the balcony. I am giving up now as it isn't worth it but I am disappointed that I won't be able to play this game. Will there be some sort of patch to fix this problem?

HI Miguel, if he has not fixed the probelm some times on some games that I have tried to download. I have found out if I turn off my excelator they will then download right. If not I will get an error message. He can try this and see if it works.

Good luck with it I know he will love the game it is soooo good to play.

Posted by: wildjulie at July 27, 2007 11:58 AM

Wildjulie: So where is the accelerator and
how do you turn it off. I can not get beyond where you enter the balcony and it freezes. I am hoping the back-up CD will provide some kind of a fix
or else I have just bought a game I can not play.

how do you finish leavl 18?

Posted by: jenifer at July 27, 2007 05:57 PM

Wendy, the accleator is on your computer not the game.My sever is Netzero so it just depends on who you have some may have Mozilla or others like that it is just a boost to give you more power or to make things go faster. But sometimes on some downloads it does soemthing to them and they will not load right. There is some bugs in this game too so go out of the game and back in to see if that will work. Again good luck

Posted by: wildjulie at July 27, 2007 06:16 PM

Stephanie on the puppets if you have them on right, you have to get the parts for the crank agaain there is 3 of them put them back on and put it the gate will open then.

Posted by: wildjulie at July 27, 2007 07:25 PM

Jenifer to finish level 18 there are 3 puzzel the 1st one is easy all things green.you don't have to stay and get theings in just the one puzzel to get the pieces. This one realy makes you think green frog is one of them.On the last one just click on the gems and they will give you clues like the one that says the fourth one fater the horse or some thing like that it is the stick horse. See how easy it is if you just think all of them are like this just think and you will get them.

Posted by: wildjulie at July 27, 2007 07:32 PM

just finished the game. soooo disapointed. i would never have bought it had i known it was gonna end this way.....wont be paying for the sequal.

I have to agree with Robyn that the ending came all too soon as was very disappointing, it's like a to be continued ending. Saying that I did enjoy the actual game as it made you think of how to solve puzzles not just find items. The ending did let it down though.

Posted by: Leslie at July 28, 2007 10:40 AM

Leslie,

Place the screw driver on the trap door hinge after the wheelbarrow has been moved. Then take the stick horse and place it close to the hinge and it will open the door.

HELP!
The piano puzzle is hard for me to figure out. I am deaf and can not hear the tunes and no one is home to help me at the moment. Does anyone know the keys...ie. C/D/E/G sequences? Any help would be appreciated.

Posted by: Julia at July 28, 2007 11:10 AM

JULIA, JUST WATCH THE KEYS AS IT PLAYS THE TUNE IS THE BEST WAY BECAUSE IT PLAYS DIFFERENT SONGS FOR DIFFENRENT PLAYERS.cLICK ON THE pITCURE THEN ON THE PIANO AND JUST WATCH THE KEYS YOU WILL GET IT,

how do you watch the keys playing after you click the picture to know what key sequence to copy
i try to click on the piano after i click picture and it wont let me until it stops playing

Posted by: Stephanie at July 28, 2007 06:02 PM

Stephanie, click on the picture then wait then click on the piano if it is too soon it will tell you so then after you are at the piano click on the crank and watch the keys close and then with the mouse play the same keys if the 1st time you don't get it just click on the crank again till you get it right the go back and do it again with the rest of the pic.'s till you get them all.
Good Luck and if you need anymore help I am here.

the only problem with dream chronicles review is its size. it's too small, by any comparison. that's obviously why the trial period is 30 minutes instead of 60. it's a pity they didn't make twice the levels on this game, because it'd be an even bigger temptation then.

Posted by: surfmadpig at July 29, 2007 03:40 PM

I am also stuck on the stairs. So far I have managed to go through all of the rest with no help whatsoever but the stairs have stumped me.
I have tried to press the buttons in order of their blinking i.e. 1,3,1,4. No joy. Then 1,2,3,4 and again, nothing. So far, I have tried all of the logical sequences but still nothing.
HELP please.

I'n stuck in the treehouse as well. I've gotton the wagon all together with wheels and oil and moved. Ok, where do I go from there. Someone said to put screwdriver by hinge and then toy horse handle. Are these objects suppose to remain on the spot while retreiving the other object? mine don't stay unless the item is in its right function. Jeeze, where do I go now, the wall is twinkling to the right of the window by what looks like a scribbled circular saw blade, but when I click on this area, nothing. HELP!! Thanks Annie

Very last puzzle, far right symbol, where you have to click on the crystals to get clues... Ok, I got that the sixth slot is pi, the 2nd slot is 3, the cat goes somewhere between 3 and 7, I'm guessing 7-3=4... and I THINK the roman numeral 7 goes in the 4th slot, followed by the hobby horse. How do I figure out the remaining slots?? I only see 4 crystals with hints...

Posted by: akira at August 1, 2007 06:35 AM

I still have not figured out how to get the steps to switch to on. Call me daft, but I really can't see it. Despite some well meant ideas as I have already tried to count the lights etc. nothing works. I do not want to give up so far on in the game. No cryptic clues please, just straight forward answers please.

Posted by: jacky flay at August 1, 2007 11:28 AM

Ok Jacky Flay go tothe stairs and at the bottom click on them, then watch the lights on the post you then have to click on each post in order to get the 1st part of the stairs to show up do this each time till all of the stair case is there. Then you will have to find all the pictures again, but hey you don't have to play a piano this time. Good luc with the stairs. But watch real close if you don't get it the 1st time it will repeat for you.

having trouble in the library. I put the books back in its shelf. Pick up the globe and the mystery book. Put the book on the floor and open it. Where is the crystal??

Posted by: sarah at August 6, 2007 09:02 AM

sarahdara, when you put the globe on it's base the drawer opens, the crystal is in the drawer. The globe is top shelf on the left. The base is on the top shelf in the 4th cabinet from left.

Darcy, I think you had to move one of the blue pots on the left to be able to put the red pot there.

Jackie Flay, you just have to repeat the pattern of the lights exactly, after it plays the pattern, you repeat it. Each time 4 steps will flip over. I think you have to do this 4 times. (4 different patterns.)

Posted by: Carla at August 6, 2007 11:51 AM

perhaps I have to play it again all over as no steps appear at all and no new pattern. boo hoo

I have just contacted KatGames since I also freeze when I click to enter the balcony. I may also contact Big Fish Games for a refund/exchange for my game purchase. I have tried all the updating and reinstalling of Java, DirectX and Flash. I uninstalled and reinstalled the game 3 or 4 times. I changed players and started over about 5 or 6 times (after each of the reinstalls/updates). I did not use a download accelerator to download the game and got it from two different sites...so I think it could be something in the game that does not like something in my computer.

Posted by: Rose at August 13, 2007 05:41 AM

Peter: When you put the heads back on the puppets, make sure you have the king's head on the right body. The jester & the king are dressed similarly and aren't sitting where you would expect. I mixed them up my first run through and it took forevvvver to figure this out & move on. Good luck. :)

help me on chapter 18..!!! :'(

Posted by: lona at September 13, 2007 03:36 AM

I agree with the others who said this game is way too short. I really feel ripped off. You can play it again once or twice, but it's not really something you can play again and again. The solutions to the puzzles don't even change on different plays! I thought I got shorted with Azada, but at least that has games you can play again after you solve the main puzzle,
Also, the only part of this game that was truly difficult was when it was too dark or graphically short to see anything. Half the time the only reason the "glint" was necessary was because something was "hidden" in such a way that you actually would not be able to see it visually. How is that a seek and find?
Like Robyn, I wouldn't have bought it had I known it would be so short and have no real increase in difficulty. It would have been smarter to make an incredible first game and give us the shaft on the sequel. Instead you've lost me, and I'm sure countless more, as customers for the sequel.

Posted by: Cata at September 13, 2007 09:32 PM

To everyone that says the game is short: Did you enjoy the game at all?

Posted by: Miguel Tartaj at September 14, 2007 03:28 AM

You have to be very exact in the placement of things like screwdrivers, colored tiles, where you cut a rope etc. Just keep moving things around and you'll find the spot. The piano room was hard because I am not a musician. Miguel, you must be trying to teach us all to play the piano at least once (or 8 times) in our lives!
The game is wonderful, beautiful and very entertaining. For those of you who think it is too short, slow down, enjoy the journey!

HI IN the piano room, do you just let the crank play the music or do you have to press they keys? Please help me, I'm going mad!!!

Posted by: Jo at October 13, 2007 04:02 PM

Hi Jo,
Click on a picture..it will play a tune. Once the tune is finished go to the piano and click on the crank. The piano will repeat that tune. Watch which keys are used to play the tune then repeat the tune exactly by pressing the correct keys. I found it helpful to draw a keyboard and use a number system to indicate which keys to press and in what order. Repeat this same procedure for each picture. It will take awhile. Hope this helps.......Jon

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me! I'm stuck on I think it's chapter 14, the one with the weights, toys, books, and fruit. What am I supposed to do? Do I have to put the proper items on the posts at the gate? If so, which ones? I'm trying to balance the items and the weights, but I'm having difficulty. HELP!

Posted by: Terri at November 27, 2007 06:51 PM

Hi Y'all,
For all of the people who are asking for this game for FREE, you van get it at Mostfun.com, you just have to watch a few commercials in between, and most of them are very funny to boot. You van get all of the games from Playfirst for as long as you want them!!

Posted by: Leigh at November 28, 2007 06:54 PM

Hi Terri i am also stuck

on this same level i think

you have to weight the items

they have to match the posts at

the gate but so far i have not been

able to get it right. I have taken a brake from

it i was also stuck for age on the statute so

hopefully when i come back to it i will be able

to figure it out. Good Luck with your game

Posted by: Jackie at November 30, 2007 08:12 AM

Terri:
To get the correct weights and open the gate, first click on the gate and 4 or 5 poles are there, each pole has a number. place random objects(toys, books, fruit ect from around the town) on each pole, and you see the pole sinks lower into the ground. you have to put the correct weight on, so that the pole sinks to the number and no futher. just play around with the different weights and youll get it :]

Several people have asked this same question, but I'm still stuck. I'm in the library, I've got the book open on the floor, ready to have the missing crystal - obviously in one of the drawers - put into its aperture, I've got the globe in my inventory bar, but I can't get the globe onto its stand. What am I doing wrong?

Hey. I stuck in dark room. the lights are very bad. Where can i find her husband? in wich room? thanks

Posted by: anchii at January 14, 2008 07:59 AM

The Mysterious book that you get after you put all of the other books on the shelves goes on the floor where that pattern is then the book will open and you have to put the crystal into it so that it can charge and then a secret passageway will open.

Posted by: NIna at January 21, 2008 02:55 PM

If you are stuck in the room with the staircase then you have to turn on the lights in the right order. When you click on the lights they flash either one, two, three or four times you have to click them in the right order accroding to how many times they flash, then you have copy the pattern they show on the lamp posts and find the pictures that are scattered across the room and put them back on the walls when you are finished that one of the doors will open an you can go in.

Posted by: Nina at January 21, 2008 03:04 PM

for everyone stuck on chapter 15 after you find all of the parts for the lamp post put them together and then put the pattern they said on the board on to the tree trunks after that they will glow blue and you have to click on the board that will lead to the mansion.

Help,
I am stuck on chapter 15. I got the lamp together, then was able to put the puzzle pieces together in the tree trunk.
The one on the left glows blue, the one on the right doesn't do anything.
I have no sound on my computer, so if there is something to do with sound, that opts me out.
On the tree puzzle right side, On the top three squares I have, in the first space, the half circle that looks as it has an eye lid above it, the second square is empty, and the third is the same as the first.
Row 2: Half circle with a line to the left, middle square, same as square 1 and 3 on top row.
Row 3: position 1 and 3, half circle with line to the side and bottom, position 2 looks like a door.
HELP
