Playdek to bring Dungeons & Dragons to mobile devices

One step backwards, two steps forwards – that the kind of month it’s been for Playdek.  It was only days ago that the company announced it would no longer be partnering with Stone Blade Entertainment – the tabletop games company whose mobile ports Playdek has built their reputation on.  And while that seemingly spelled a troubled future for the company, today’s announcement handily snuffs out any such concerns.

In partnership with Wizards of the Coast (WotC’s parent company, Hasbro), Playdek will be bringing the Dungeons & Dragons brand to mobile devices.

“We are thrilled to work with Wizards of the Coast to bring their great games to digital devices,” said Joel Goodman, CEO, Playdek . “We’ve always been big fans of Wizard’s games and it is an honor to work with their talented team to re-create this compelling entertainment in a mobile form. New and existing fans will soon be able to enjoy them anywhere and anytime. “

There’s no word yet on what the games will be, though a straight adaptation of classic D&D gameplay would be the ultimate fanboy fantasy.  Just as likely might be a tabletop-to-digital conversion of any of the D&D board games, something new and unique, or anything in between.  It’s also possible that this deal might reach to other Wizards of the Coast properties.  With everything from Magic the Gathering to HeroScape (a personal, albeit discontinued, favorite) under the WotC banner, I suppose anything’s possible.

No word yet on how this Playdek deal might affect the fate of the Atari-published Dungeons & Dragons: Warbands, though since it’s still on the Canadian App Store, we’re holding out hope that it’ll see the light of day eventually.
