Closet Top Gun aficionados with a love for touch screens had cause to rejoice when MetalStorm: Online hit the App Store earlier this year. A freemium dogfighting affair, the game pitted player against player as they took to the virtual skies. Now the team at Z2Live has released MetalStorm: Wingman, a major update that brings a new name and not one, but two major additions into the fold.

The first new element players will find in Wingman is the addition of a single player campaign, which a Z2Live representative tells us was the fans’ most requested feature. What’s included here is being described as the first chapter in an epic story, so it should be interesting to see what they have in store for the future.

To go along with the new campaign are the sorts of things one hopes for in a major update – new planes, new maps, a raised level cap, AI tweaking – the works. But probably the most noteworthy feature comes in the form of some iOS 5 specific changes, which brings us to major element #2: Airplay Mirroring. That’s right – gamers lucky enough to have an iPhone 4S or iPad 2 and Apple TV will now be able to bring their MetalStorm experience to the big screen.

“Gaming in the living room has traditionally been dominated by consoles,” said Lou Fasulo, COO at Z2Live. “AirPlay Mirroring in iOS 5 has the potential to place the mobile device at the center of all home entertainment.”

Players will also be able to access their save data on more than one device thanks to iOS 5’s ability to store game saves in iCloud.

The update is live in the App Store now, so what are you waiting for? It’s time to climb back into the cockpit!
