Grave Mania: Pandemic Pandemonium Review

Feb 4, 2013

Some ideas never seem to get old. Zombies, for instance, seem to hold an endless fascination for us, and time management games seem to have a similarly evergreen appeal. In 2012, Anino Games bundled the two concepts into one ghoulishly frantic package in Grave Mania: Undead Fever, and this year they bring us the sequel to that game, Grave Mania: Pandemic Pandemonium. While this new offering's not significantly different from its predecessor, it does offer a more streamlined approach to time management.

Zombies and Trains Preview

Feb 4, 2013

In the last few years, we’ve obliterated zombies on our touch screens with almost everything we could think of. Plants vs. Zombies let us fight the undead with a garden full of sunflowers and walnuts. In Zombieville U.S.A., we took to the overrun streets with a shotgun in hand and a bazooka by our side. But all this time, we’ve overlooked one of the most efficient forms of zombie-killing weaponry known to man: trains.

Horse Life Adventures Review

Feb 4, 2013

Video games are cool for multiple reasons, but they’re especially good at offering substitutions in areas where real life fails. For example, how many kids beg their parents for a pony? Pretty much all of them. How many are disappointed because their parents can’t afford a pony, or are disallowed to keep it in the garage? Pretty much all of them. But through the magic of games, horse enthusiasts can go galloping across the rolling hills—unless they’re playing Horse Life Adventures for iOS, which lets them look at their horse and not do much else.

Krashlander Preview

Feb 4, 2013

Robots have invaded your home world and slaughtered everyone. You’re the last person left. How do you defend yourself and repel the invaders? Get them drunk on WD-40 and push them all into a deep hole with a bulldozer? Make it rain and turn them into piles of rust? Or maybe you’re better off bodily slamming into them all. The premise for Krashlander doesn’t sound very sensible, but it’s arguably the most fun you’ll have kicking killer robots off your turf.

Table Top Racing Review

Feb 4, 2013

When I was kid, there was nothing more fun than driving my Matchbox cars around my room and making engine noises with my mouth. Swimming Against the Current: Moving from Video Game to Board Game Design

Feb 2, 2013

I am a video game designer. Or at least, I was. A few weeks ago I made a seemingly giant leap: from the profitable, growing-like-wildfire world of free-to-play digital games to the low-profit-margin world of board games. I left my awesome job at PopCap Games working with creative, talented people to pursue my life-long passion. Developing board games is still dark and mysterious to me, but I’ve found that what I’ve learned from building video games can shed some light on this new world.

Frog Orbs Preview

Feb 1, 2013

Have you ever wondered what would happen if the fate of the world was placed in the slimy four-toed hands of a wizard frog? Yeah, me too. But luckily we don’t have to wonder for long, as the upcoming mobile arcade game Frog Orbs will show us just how far a wizard frog is willing to go when his precious stash of flies gets compromised. Ballpit Monster’s Frog Orbs is a “modern, deeper retelling of the fixed arcade shooter,” and looks to bring some fast-paced and ribbeting—I mean riveting—action to our touch screens this month. And really, what’s more modern these days than a frog in a wizard hat?
