Ever since the dawn of mankind, as defined as since the release of FarmVille, Zynga has had the number one app on Facebook in terms of daily average users (DAU’s) until now.

Today, OMGPOP’s Draw Something is officially the most popular app on Facebook with 10.8 million DAU’s, compared to Words with Friends with 8.6 million DAU’s according to AppData.

Is a Draw Something TV show in the works?

Mar 16, 2012

Draw Something is a hit iOS and Android game that encourages you to, er, draw something. If you've ever played Pictionary, you have a good idea of how Draw Something works, though your guessing audience is an anonymous internet group instead of a high-strung family member ("It's dignity, Luann! Don't you know dignity when you see it?"). In other words, there's not a whole lot of complication or backstory behind Draw Something, but according to rumor, that's not going to stop developer OMGPOP from putting together a TV show based on the game.

It’s an exciting day for Apple and its gamers as iPad 3 is officially released today with retina display and promise of faster game play with out-of-this-world graphics. Creative convergence is the biggest game trend of 2012 so far

Mar 16, 2012

Yes, I just made that term up. Actually, the biggest buzzwords from walking the halls of the Game Developer Conference (GDC) are freemium and free-to-play (“f2p”) which apparently are two technically different terms but to me mean the exact same thing. Every company plans to release games that are free to play to start, but encourage purchases to keep playing. Some vocal players may gripe, but they are in the minority since games are making a lot more money with freemium than any other model out there.

Brandnew Boy Review

Mar 15, 2012

2.5

One of the major problems facing iPhone 3D games is the issue of movement. Some games have tried to superimpose buttons and joysticks on the screen, which in my estimation is a terrible way to try to navigate game space. With Brandnew Boy, developer Oozoo has come up with an elegant and surprisingly effective way to move—unfortunately, that is about the long and short of what is good about the game.

Play air hockey against your kitty with You vs. Cat for the iPad

Mar 15, 2012

The cats have taken over our beds, sprawled out on our favorite sections of the couch, and bogarted those rare, tiny patches of sunlight that seep into our houses in the dead of winter. Now cats are getting into video games, starting with You vs. Cat for the iPad. Will this madness--this fuzzy, whiskered, pink-nosed madness--never end?

Gardenscapes: Mansion Makeover Review

Mar 14, 2012

4.5

When we last played Gardenscapes, Playrix offered us a chance to create the garden of our dreams by completing tons of hidden object scenes in order to earn money via a never-ending yard sale. Now that the garden is the talk of the town, plenty of friends want to come and visit. Unfortunately we’ve spent so much time out in the garden that we’ve completely forgotten about the sad state of the mansion itself! In Gardenscapes: Mansion Makeover, you’ll need to throw another yard sale in order to purchase upgrades for your mansion before your friends arrive.

Last week, Josh and I were lucky enough to attend this year's Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco. Held at the Moscone Center in the heart of downtown, GDC is the world's largest professionally-focused video game event - and a hell of a good time.

Besides some excellent networking, and some post-"networking" hangovers, the week gave us a first-hand look at some ways the game industry continues to change. So from two first time GDC-ers to you, here are three industry lessons you need to know for 2012.

Mar 14, 2012

Some complex financial news this morning as we have just learned that Zynga will be pursuing a secondary stock offering in the hopes of raising $400 million. However, and here’s where things get tricky, only a specific class of stocks are going to be sold and the driving purpose behind the move is not to raise money for the company, but rather to force those already holding stock to hang onto it for a longer term.

Shinobi ZIN Review

Mar 14, 2012

1.5

Ninjas are meant to be stealthy dealers of silent death. However, if they’re anything like the characters in Shinobi ZIN then you can likely see them coming a mile away and dispatch them with minimal difficulty. What starts off as a promising action-puzzler quickly collapses under its own weight as it tries to be too clever for its own good.
