So, has anyone else had trouble producing food? I'm a good way into the game with 4 veg. farms and a pig farm with windmills and graineries but all of a sudden I can't get enuogh food? Any ideas?

If you are in the first "town" then this is a natural disaster..it happens maybe every 30 minutes or so in the game after getting established...just when people leave put the new people on the farms and make sure your wells and water towers are producing enough...after a bit when all seems lost it will suddenly all be right again.

How do you make an outpost? I can make one in the sandbox but for the actual quest it will not let me and I cannot move on without it. Also I am running out of wood so I need to get this game moving on.

I am having a hard time with the outpost too... i have approximately 600 gold and wood, 30 buildings, Ive built the new house for the people that didnt want to be near the road, and i have three farms and 1 ranch... When I click on the platform nothing happens... I have two different quests I can go on but they both tell me I have to build an outpost... What should we do or who do we write to, to get the answers?

You need to click on the outpost and the little window will appear at the bottom you then need to click on the building in that window it will cost you to build it and won't work if you don't have enough gold and lumbar. Have fun!

producing food becomes a problem if you get too much of a population to support. If people leave from hunger click on thier homes and destroy them so no one new will move in. You have to get a balance back between food production and number to feed. not the best answer but if you are running out of other things you need to cut back. I figure one food worker for every 3 population to stay afloat. Make sense?

Ms-Missy gives the best tip I've seen work. That balance is important. Also remember that livestock takes up a whole lot of grain, so if you have a lot of livestock, you have to keep them fed, too.
Part of keeping the balance between population and resources comes in with employment. If you have businesses that don't need full time employees (store, trade post, saloon, etc.), then you don't need to add to your population. Simply choose a character already employed who can be spared for a minute, unemploy them at their current job, re-employ them for what you need (like dynamite from the store), get what you need, unemploy the person again, and then re-employ at their original job. This works great with farm workers and ranch hands.

Oh yeah...a couple of things I forgot...
Have someone fish when you run low on food. A couple of someones, even. As has been said, running low on food just happens as part of the game. Often you will see famine hit your town. Great time to go fishing without using more resources! My experience has been that one farm with 2 employees will feed 8 people just at the point of hunger. If you have a ranch, you need two farms (both with at least one grainery...but more than 2 graineries usually is a waste of resources...and one windmill each), at least one water tower and a smoke house. This will keep about 15 people good and fed and will will usually weather any famines or droughts. Keep an excess amount of water around for the ranches.

Yes! everytime I go into the store it starts flashing and locks up. I have to use my task manager to stop it.

This was posted a long time ago, so I'm sure that you have figured this out already, but make sure someone is working at the station, or you will not be able to proceed
