I am also stuck on this level, as you say no gears move when I take the hammer to the rock any help on this please...also I seem to have what looks like a saucepan lid left from something and help on this.

The saucepan lid goes near the other saucepan lid in the upper right of the screen. I think Margie called it a "wheel" in the walkthrough.
The hammer issue is a sequence problem. You are using the hammer on a hidden door in the rock. But you can't see that door until you've placed the third grey/yellow tile in the opening to the right of the scene. When you place the tile there, the green leaves in front of the rock on the left move aside, and THEN you can use the hammer on the rock.
(If you don't have the grey/yellow tile yet, you get the last piece of it by doing the flashing lights puzzle in the other scene.)
