I am posting my review here, because it is too long for the user review section. I am so shocked that I rate this game with only three stars, because the production values can easily compete with a full-price game. This game is similar to Port Royale, if you know that, but in the opposite to the two prequels, one longer travels by ship, but by camels, so it has also an adventure element when you lead your troop through East Asia. The plot and the characters are superb and if one remarks the extremely long and numerous (but exciting) dialogues, the very low number of mistakes is outstanding for a casual game. What really devalues the game is the grade of difficulty. When I started playing I left the "Easy Mode" activated and already after half an hour playing I was not able anymore to beat the enemies I met while travelling. Of course one has the possibility to flee, but that is boring and you cannot avoid to lose at least some of your men. It is a shame. Such a great game with the worst balancing I've met yet. Your comments about this game are so valuable and important for people who might be considering buying this game. I wish we were allowed to post comments like this in the review section. That is where most people look, especially people who are not veteran users of this site. If we ever get the ability to post longer reviews I hope you will copy and repost this in the review section. Kudos for such a good honest review! Send a Kudo

    Hi Orangeknickers,

I made the same experience and it bores me a lot. Okay, Im not the one who appreciates any kind of fighting (and I do not see the reason for it), but this is an other issue.

The only thing I found out, was, that when you close the game during a battle and go back then, they will bring you back to the last town, what might give you the possibility to choose another way.

    Greetings, Kayleigh

@Pilar: Thank you. I am loving it to review games, but you are right, atm there is just not enough space in the review section. I will definitely put it in there when the limitation will be higher. @Kayleigh: I'm a fan of battles and fighting neither, but in the tradewinds series it is somewhat different, I do not know why. I also noticed the possibility you mentioned, but this does not help, becuase there is no other way - one of the main tasks is to travel between the different ancient cities and there are always strong enemies you simply cannot avoid. The balance was much better and more motivating in the prequels :

Oh oh, good to know because so far i was entranced by this sequel (i played only one hour of it). Impossible again? Or at least as you seem to mention, quite hard to beat. It's a shame because even if the fights are part of Tradewinds, the quests and the humour are the main interest, at least for me! Good review btw!

Hi all, Sandlot Games has released an updated version of Tradewinds Caravans, labeled v1.001. This new build includes a small adjustment in the strength of basic combat units (melee and archers) and decreases, by a small amount, the strength of the mythical creatures. This slight adjustment in balance should help those who commented on the difficulty early on in the game. Thanks

The fighting was difficult on just this side of impossible. HOWEVER, all of the GUILDS have AMMO SHOPS,which in turn offer a magic weapon called HEAVENLY FIRE. At 15,000 coins, it's expensive, so trade in the games cash crop: SILK, A silk bought in Zhangye for 8800 coins will usually sell for 400-2000 coins more in EACH successive city to the West of it. I bought nine silk in Zhangye for 8800 coin each and went to Baghdad on a quest. When I stopped to sell some tea, the silk were now worth 22,000 each. (-whee!-)This technique will make the HEAVENLY FIRE ammo seem quite a bargain very quickly. 3-4 HEAVENLY FIRE weapons will take out a whole screen of Bandits with very little damage to your party. Hope this helps.

I got the new version, 1.001, and the difficulty level was fine. However, I just didn't feel Caravans matched up to its predecessors, particularly Legends, in humour, battle, or strategic gameplay.

In Legends the battlescreens were big, and it was easy to compare my army with the opponents, and easy to decide where to target and when to flee. Here fighters were tiny and in profile.

In Legends, the hints were very valuable for the trading part of the game. In Caravans, I could never figure out how long it was going to take me to get from one place to another, so I couldn't plan purchases and sales or time quests well.

And the humour in Legends was brilliant, surprising, fresh, and funny. Here things like the joke about the sitar band just seemed predictable and tired.

Caravans was OK, I still gave it 3 stars, but it was the same complaint I had about Dairy Dash relative to Diner Dash--it was a new setting, but otherwise a step back from what made its predecessor great.

I have played all the Tradewinds games and love this type of game. But I have mixed feelings about this one. I have the new version but still find the battles difficult. What makes them worse is the fact that often as soon as you finish one and click on the box that tells you how much you won, another battle immediately starts with the maximum amount of enemies, a setup that is almost impossible to win. And you constantly have to keep hiring at the guild which is expensive and often you can't find anything but the axe warriors which die so easily. I also hate the fact that you can't just go the the city you want to, that you have to trek through town after town, it's really pretty boring. I would agree that the humor and fun level are night nearly as good as Legends, but the screens and colors are beautiful.

You are right Hopespring. I also resent the fact of having to go all the way to cities I don't want to visit right now again. Even if I enjoy the game, I miss the freedom of movement we had in the other titles.

I also realised that, for me, it was depressing to be constantly losing warriors. I know that's realistic, but I don't play realistic war games for a reason--I don't like them. Losing some money on a sale, no problem, Losing 4 out of 10 warriors--took the fun out of the game, even if I won the battle. There were also a couple of weird sequencing things. Being a mom myself, I wanted to rescue my boy as soon as possible. So once I had the $1,000, I headed back to the city to try to ransom him. But the game wouldn't let me, and I wasted a lot of time. I had to wait until I'd done what the brother in law needed and then use HIS money. There was another sequence issue where I bought a rug in the right city but it didn't count because I hadn't spoken to the right person first. I ended up having to sell it and buy it immediately back. These were little things, but I'm wondering if this game was designed more for the typical male point of view? (Of course there are exceptions on all sides, there are some women who love to play shooter games, all that, but I'm just saying typical.) I just have a feeling I might have been able to appreciate the graphics in the battle scenes more if I didn't hate losing the warriors so much.
