Build up your town and then defend it in this PC indie game

Are you capable of building a house? A better question is, are you capable of building a town and defending it from bloodthirsty monsters? Give it a try with Towns, an independently-made building and property management game that’s mixed with role-playing elements.

Towns

In Towns, players build and fortify their blocky little homestead, which supplies the game’s hero with everything he needs to descend into the nearby depths. What lurks in those depths? Monster lairs brimming with baddies who wish to snuff out your beloved hamlet’s existence.

Towns‘ lead developer, Xavi Canal, cites classic games like Diablo and Dungeon Keeper as his inspiration. “Both the RPG and strategic aspects [in Towns] will be fleshed out over a series of sprawling dungeons,” Canal states on the webpage for Towns. “Players can craft unique weapons, obtain randomized loot and build a settlement capable of holding back the forces that come up from the depths.”

Canal notes that Towns is also heavily inspired by Dwarf Fortress, another role-playing/building game. “I have always been fascinated by the game Dwarf Fortress, even though I have never played it in a devout manner,” he says. “It’s due mainly to its steep learning curve. One day I found a series of Spanish tutorials on YouTube (a 40 or 50 videos series), where I could get a hold of the basics. From there on, Towns began growing in my mind little by little.”

So if you’re similarly interested in the concept behind Dwarf Fortress but find it indigestible, Towns might be your answer. You can find it on the PC, Mac, and Linux.

Currently, there’s no final release date projected for Towns, but Gamezebo will keep on top of the game’s progress.
