I am having the same problem. It is very frustrating that you only have 5 chances to find the correct numbers. It doesn't help to write down the nunmbers used since they change after the 5th miss. I also agree that the game is very confusing. If I did not have the walkthrough I would not be this far. I didn't know you had to click on the green checks until I read the tips.

When this game first came out on Big Fish, it was timed only. The first two times I was successful, I had very little time left and ran out of time on the next puzzle. Had to start section all over. Then Big Fish updated Sherlock with a NO timer feature. All I had to do was uninstall the game and then re-install and thank goodness there was the non timed button. The locked box is the hardest part of the whole game I think. The numbers are all random and change each time you try. Pillar was right, if I didn't get 3 the first try, I reset. The wrong numbers I went up or down according to what they were and what I already had.(can't use same number twice and be sure to use zero). The one after it was the hardest for me. The dredded strings. I cring even now thinking about them. I tried and tried and was ready to pull my hair out. The only saving value was it WASN'T timed. My husband came into the computer room and asked what I was doing. I remember what I said. "I'm about ready to throw the computer out). My frustration talking. He looked at the strings and said move this one, and so on. It took him less than 5 minutes to do those lousy strings. I had been at it for two days. After that level, it gets better. I finished the game. With tips, of course. If not for the no time feature, I probably wouldn't have finished it. I don't think I will try anymore of this type of Sherlock Holmes games because of the random type puzzles. I like a little logic to my puzzles but I still hated the strings!

I love to solve logic puzzles. But oh, I hated the locked box puzzle. It is not as much logic and skill as luck that can solve that one. When I first started trying to solve it I though I would go nuts. I was so discouraged but then I knew that other people had solved it so that gave me the determination to try it some more.
So what I do now is reset it until I get at least 3 green on the first round. Then I find that it helps me to write down what numbers I have used. Short term memory is not what is used to be. I have been able to solve it several times now. But still you just have to be lucky to some extent. I think that level is the most difficult because that puzzle can take up so much time.
