Pacific Rim Preview

It sure looks like it’s shaping up to be the summer of blockbuster movie releases. And since we’re living in 2013 where mobile gaming dominates the entertainment industry, that now means it’s also going to be the summer of blockbuster movie tie-in games! We already had some coverage on the mobile game versions of After Earth and the upcoming Man of Steel this week, and up next is Pacific Rift, a new 3D action game based on the Guillermo del Toro film of the same name.

Giant robots trump giant monsters any day of the week.

In the game, players will take on the role of a rookie Jockey in command of a giant Jaeger robot, as they protect the world’s largest cities from an imposing alien threat called the Kaijus. As they rise through the ranks to become an ace Jockey, players can expect to build lethal combos, unlock new weapons and technology, and really show off their skills in the game’s bonus Survival Mode. While the game is closely influenced by events that happen in the movie, it should also be known that Pacific Rim can be played and enjoyed as an entirely stand-alone experience.

Looking at the first released screenshots of the game, Pacific Rim sort of reminds me of those old Power Ranger episodes, when the villain of the week would suddenly transform in size, and then the Rangers would form the Megazord and just pound the heck out of the giant monster amidst a skyscraper battlefield. All I know is that I’m going to have all sorts of fun going toe-to-toe with those ugly aliens in my awesome robot suit.

The game is being developed by Reliance Games, in conjunction with the film’s producers at Legendary Pictures to make sure the experience does del Toro’s vision justice. CEO of Reliance Games, Manish Agarwal, commented about the upcoming high-adrenaline project, and said “With the Pacific Rim mobile game, we are drawing from deep experience to create a thrilling standalone component to the Pacific Rim brand that will wow mobile gamers and film fans alike.”

The Pacific Rim movie is set to hit theaters on July 12, so we can probably expect to see the Pacific Rim mobile tie-in get released somewhere around that timeframe this summer. The game will be available for both smartphones and tablets, although specific platforms have yet to be announced.
