When people talk about the history of casual gaming, names like Bejeweled and Tetris get thrown around a lot. But for me, there’s one title that always springs to mind when we talk about the early days of casual: Lemmings.

Back it 1991, when the rest of the gaming world was being enveloped by games like Street Fighter II and Sonic the Hedgehog, Lemmings became a shining beacon of accessible gameplay that anyone could get into. Originally developed for the Amiga, the game was quickly ported to every platform available at the time. In the early 90’s, everyone was playing Lemmings. Now, nearly 20 years later, the original puzzle classic is on its way to the iPhone… for free.

Developer Mobile 1Up completed porting its Palm OS version of Lemmings to the iPhone this past weekend, and has submitted it to Apple for approval. The only thing that may prevent the game from being approved seems to be a copyright concern, however a representative from Mobile 1Up said on the TouchArcade forums that “no one knows who owns it anymore – that’s why I’m doing it free. I just want to play it. There is Lemmings DS out there which has not been affected, and neither was my original version I had on Palm OS.”

If approved, Mobile 1Up’s release of Lemmings should be on the App Store sometime soon, and will feature the 120 levels included in the original. Want to be the first to know when Lemmings hits the App Store? Set a Gamezebo game alert!
