I couldn't see any purpose except just to see if you could find all 5 in the scenes that they were in. They don't give you extra hints or oxygen or anything that I could tell. At the beginning of the game when you are invited to go on the dives you are given a mission. Here's what it says. "Your primary mission is to find artifacts and most importantly the Queen's crown. Because the mission is dangerous the gems are yours to keep."
