Topic: Only 10% of women play casual games?

  • Only 10% of women play casual games?

This is news to me!  Most of them are women and they do play casual games.....I think the numbers are a little off!

There might be a difference in the genres, but I would think that it is about equal when it comes to actual numbers!

Suki, I agree with you.  I thought that number was way too low.  I'm not sure where they got their data from.

  • I don't know, it doesn't

I don't know, it doesn't sound that off to me - I know women of all ages and very few of them have played casual games and I don't know any who play on a frequent basis.

Most casual game players are women but most women aren't casual game players-it's an interesting marketing conundrum...

  • Jaylee, I have to agree with

    Jaylee,

I have to agree with Scooter and Suki. I think that the man has been sadly “misinformed” by others in the industry (or in his own company) as to his figures. The man (John Barbour) who made the statement has only been, and I quote from the article: [John Barbour has been the president of Real Games — Real Networks’ gaming division that was set to spin off before the IPO market froze over — for just 14 weeks.]. Further more, take a look at other gaming sites such as our own and Big Fish and you will see that they are overwhelmingly dominated by women. Also who really controls the purse strings in today’s families whether we men are willing to admit it or not (and that’s not just in the USA, either). The “Buying Public” of women out there is a lot bigger the 10% that he claims. If you notice at the end of the article Mr. [Barbour would not disclose when Real Games will officially spin off from Real Networks.]. Think that I will have to take the things he had to say with several large grains of salt, particularly the 10% part. Just one "Old" man’s opinion.

    Happy Gaming All,

  • There is no implied

    Report as Inappropriate

There is no implied comparison between men and women. The claim is that 10% of all women who use the internet are casual gamers. There is no reason to infer that the percentage of male Internet users who casual game is higher, and indeed, I'm sure it's probably lower for reasons you have all elucidated. It's clear that women are the dominant purchasers of casual games. Barbour was simply pointing out that the casual gaming industry could do a better job of gaining market share among female internet users. After all, casual gaming sites are competing with a lot of other stuff out there.

Where I agree with all of you is that "10%" is too nice a number to be realistic. He is probably rounding down.

  • I wasn't referring to men

    Report as Inappropriate

I wasn't referring to men vs. women casual gamers at all in my post.  I know that women are the major audience for casual games.  I was referring to Barbour's statement that women casual gamers are a small percent of women in general, and maybe not 10% but probably not all that much higher.

And, thanks mkinyon, for expressing that apparently better then I can...

You know one now!  I don't even go to my trailer in summer without my laptop..........

I play on average at least 8 hours a day.....although some of it is beta testing....or the evaluations(that isn't really beta testing) and I work with some developers on their games!

I tried to give my son who is 28(gee I'm getting old)some free game coupons from Big Fish....he didn't want them!

We always had Nintendo's around, and he just bought the Wii...I still have the others in a games closet, along with the hundreds of games and side equipment that went along with them....the last one I bought was the N64....so the game coupons went to my daughter-in-law and her teenage daughters....those women are sure having fun, lol!

If you have ever watched LMN(Lifetime Movie Network), there are tons of ad's directing women to their site to play casual online games.....

You can check out the Forums at Giveawayoftheday, and you will see a lot of women there....it's funny, there is a real 50/50 mix on what the gals like and what the guys do!

    http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/

They used to give away free games every day, but now it's limited to the weekends...

Frankly, my husband thinks I'm nuts, but then why does he stand behind me when I'm working on a HOG....saying, isn't that it!

The games are real stress relievers..... if I'm in a bad mood  I start playing Ricochet Infinity, with the volume up loud........

    Take Care All
