I see a number of people have had problems with this one, so here's the solution. This is a two step lock.

For the first step, you have to get a copy of the fingerprint of the person who usually works in that part of the museum (in the present, the prison is a museum). To do this, you need to get a bowl from the present, take it to the past, get the ashes from the lefthand prison cell, bring them back to the future, and put the ashes on the drinking glass on the desk. Use an inventory item and cut a piece of adhesive tape. The tape is on a little stand by the righthand cell in the present. Use the tape to "lift" the fingerprint off the glass, then touch the tape with the fingerprint to the safe.

So far so good. Now for combination lock. You will need to find 3 numbers. I'm going to assume for this post that you already found them, since most people posting seemed to know that they are 63, 11, 16.

The lock has 3 rotating dials, from outermost to innermost. We'll call them A, B, and C, with A being the largest outermost one.

If you look on each dial, notice that the hash marks are set for each TWO numbers.  So between 10 and 20 there are only 4 hashmarks, which represent 12, 14, 16, and 18.  That is, the hashmarks represent the even numbers.

So as you set each dial, you need to set it half way between two hashmarks if it's an odd number, right on a hashmark if it's an even number.

Set A (the largest outermost dial) to 63. So go to 60, then one hashmark, and then halfway to the next hashmark.

Set B (the middle dial) to 11. Start at 10 and then go halfway to the first hashmark. Do not go all the way to the first hashmark or you're entering 12 instead of 11--I think that's one of the problems people are having.

Finally, set C (the innermost dial) to 16. Start at 10, then go in 3 hashmarks.

I believe you have to set the numbers in this order (outermost to innermost). I know you have to set the dial correctly so it's halfway between hashmarks for the odd numbers.

The safe should open. Good luck!

Thanks Robin it worked.  Finished the game as was disappointed it was over.  Wanted more and I am guessing they will continue it as the story indicates.  Hope we wont have to wait too long for it.

It's not the number of cells you can see in the scene--it's the total number of cells in the prison, which is 16.

You find this out by looking at the scroll that shows the layout of the prison, and then just counting the number of cells on it.

You can see a screenshot showing this in the walkthrough for this game (posted free here at Gamezebo). To see the walkthrough, just click on the green Tips & Tricks tab just above the whitespace on this page.

The screenshot showing the scroll is under Task 3 for this Chapter.
