Fig. 8

Browser-based bicycle rides are few and far between nowadays.  Maybe that's the reason Fig. 8 makes us smile so much.  Its playful title serves as something of a double entendre, referring to the manoeuvring of the bicycle as easily as it does to the landscape on which you'll be cycling.  Rather than riding through picturesque scenery and charming country roads, Fig. 8 will have you cycling through technical schematics on an endless sheet of paper. Icycle

Coming out of stasis only to find the world has been destroyed in an all-out nuclear conflict sounds like just about the worst day anybody could have.  But coming out of stasis to discover this in winter, completely naked, with nothing but a much-too-tiny bicycle to save you?  That's worse.  Icycle has you guiding a very chilly, very nude man on a teensy little bicycle across some terrifying terrain in an icy cold future. Swordless Ninja

Running.  Jumping.  Rescuing the princess. It's a formula that we've seen time and again in 2D platform gaming.  Super Mario Bros. first did it back in 1985, and thousands of imitators have tried to re-capture that glory since. Now a well-polished pretender to the throne is available for free in your browser.  But is Swordless Ninja different enough to set itself apart in a world of Mario-clones 25 years deep? Read more»

MagnetiZR

When I think of magnets, the first thing that comes to mind is my fridge. I have magnets shaped like every state I've visited. My fridge is covered in magnetic letters and numbers that my kids use to practice their spelling. We even have a handy magnetic clipboard we use to keep track of what we need to replace in our pantry.

But magnets can be so much cooler than that. Remember that science kit you had as a kid?  The one with the really strong magnetic blocks that attracted and repelled each other?  MagnetiZR is more like that than your silly old fridge. It tries to recapture the awe-inspiring sense of magnetic discovery we all had as kids, and as a free flash-based puzzler it does a great job of re-instilling that sense of wonder.

Boxgame

Perspective is an interesting thing. In the real world we tend to view things as three dimensional. Objects have depth. They have texture. We can touch and feel them. We're also used to the idea of a two dimensional world. Paintings. Literature. All of these things are flat. But what about the dimensions we so rarely explore? What about the fourth dimension? In Sophie Houlden's recently released mind-bending puzzler Boxgame, you're going to have to think about thinks in a perspective that will rock you right out of your comfort zone, and we love it. LEGO Star Wars: The Quest for R2-D2

If you were to stop me on the street and tell me that someone had created a LEGO Star Wars browser-game that was completely free, took hours to complete, and was even better than the originals, I would have laughed until I fell down. And yet here I am, about to tell you these very same things.

Set during the Clone Wars saga, The Quest for R2-D2 tells a new story in the Star Wars universe. Lost in space, R2 is transmitting a distress call in the hopes that he'll be picked up by a nearby ship. What he doesn't realize is that this signal also contains the blueprints to a powerful new starship. Whoever finds the droid, finds the blueprints. Both the Republic and the Sith are in a race to find R2 first.

Bunni: How We First Met

Bunni: How We First Met is an incredibly simple resource management game that never really gets too busy or complicated. The mechanics in the game are easy to pick up, and the world size and variety of items offer just the right amount of variety to keep you bouncing from one area to another to check on your workers and further expand your dominion. It may seem simple by genre standards, but simple is something that's certainly welcome in a world of traditionally all-consuming resource sims. Read more»

Crush the Castle

Crush the Castle is initially a sweet and appealing thing, much like a Cadbury creme egg.  The oozing, sugary concoctions are a rite of passage during Easter, but after three or four (or in my case, a dozen), you realize why they are confined to a single two-month portion of the candy calendar. Upgrade Complete

Self-parody as a genre may seem like a strange idea, but it's one that's crept up rather successfully in gaming over the past year.  Taking standard gameplay concepts and exploiting their ridiculousness for our amusement has proven highly successful in the world of flash games.  Web-based parodies like You Have to Burn the Rope or Super Press Space to Win Action RPG 2009 have made us chuckle more than we'd like to admit, but they all seem to suffer from one fatal flaw: they don't offer much more than a punchline.  That's where Upgrade Complete is different. Electric Box, as the name might suggest, is a game about electricity.  Specifically, it's a game about conducting electricity.  You'll need to use a variety of objects and devices to move power from one point in the puzzle to another, but the most important tool you'll use is logic.  It's been a long while since we've seen a game that put our basic reasoning skills to the grindstone so intensely. Droplets

The best aspects of Droplets by Nitrome are apparent immediately from its title screen.  As soon as it loads, you are hit by twinkling, ethereal music and somewhat-clunky, blocky and retro-cute graphics.  Droplets bears the stamp of MTV Networks, and this initial presentation immediately made me think of the days when MTV actually, gasp, showcased music as its primary product. Is Twitter the New Facebook for Casual Games?

Now that Twitter has gone mainstream (or as a very few detractors would say, has jumped the shark), it is only a matter a time before we would see casual games emerge on Twitter.

140 Mafia is a Twitter game where user collect their Mob or "followers" by fulfilling tasks, attaining property, and collecting or purchasing equipment.   The game is similar to Zynga's Mafia Wars on Facebook so it's for mature audiences only (in Movie-speak, it would be a PG-13 rating).

Tweet Bricks is a Twitter game designed to be played by everyone.  You literally play a game of Tetris with shapes created out of your or your friend's tweets.  It's a little wonky, but cool.  If you want to play Tetris with Gamezebo's tweets, be sure to follow Gamezebo on Twitter. Read more»
