This game should go back to alpha and clean up before becoming beta. 

Think I recall you need to pick up a crowbar somewhere to make it work.

You have to go upstairs,find the wench (or crane) and oil it first.You'll find the wench on the left after exiting the cargohold... Then, if I remember correctly, close that window and turn the handle to lower the hook into the cargohold. Afterwards go back down and then you'll find you CAN latch on with the cane! I hope I've been able to help out... Happy vampire hunting! Good luck! i had a problem with this also...If you hook up the hook and open the top lid the cargo will move into place and you can use the cane to hook the rope to the hook...gl enjoy

The walkthrough on Chewy Central has all the steps. Its about a 4 part process to get this to work, the walkthrough has screen shots and everything.
