OK, probably everyone else figured this out right away, but it took me awhile to realise how to use this.
It's an electronic tool, usually at the top of the tools list. Each charge is good for finding one item. It will recharge itself pretty quickly after you use it.
To use it, take it from the tools list and put it in the scene. Then start moving it slowly, either vertically or horizontally.
Eventually, you will start to see the bars light up. They go from the bottom to the top on the meter, first red, then yellow, then green.
As you get closer to the item,you get more bars. If you are going horizontally and you get just one faint red bar, then start going vertically up or down to see where the signal is stronger.
