Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP captured a lot of peoples’ imaginations when it was unveiled at the Game Developers Conference last year. The strange, haunting narrative and lovely, retro graphics were unlike anything else on iOS devices. Now, the game is much closer to completion, and it looks like it’ll be a pretty spectacular adventure RPG when it comes out.

From best we can gather, the game features a fairly abstract plotline. Apparently the game revolves around a quest to find a book called the Megatome, though there’s not much instructional text (and what few clues are available are rather incoherent).

The visual style is still unlike anything else on the market. The basic graphics are pixilated in the same manner that a lot of PC adventure games were back in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Yet the animation is beautifully fluid and fast, and there’s an underlying sinister feeling in the screens that many big-budget titles often fail to pull off.

Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP has been in development for over a year, which is an incredibly long time for an iOS game. It turns out that what was on display at last year’s GDC was all that had been done by that point. Now, though, there’s a massive world for players to explore and experience.

Almost everything in the game can be interacted with in some way, shape, or form. The game utilizes a tap interface, and you can drag the main character around the screen as he goes on his quest. Meanwhile, tapping on just about everything in the game reacts: flora will shake, animals run away, and double-tapping sends the character to a specific location.

The end of the rather creepy new trailer seems to imply that the game’s going to be released “around the Vernal Equinox”, which means Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP should be on the App Store sometime around March 20th.
